McDonald Observatory
Stay in your classroom and visit McDonald Observatory in the “Live from McDonald Observatory” distance learning programs.
These programs are interactive science learning experiences that take you and your students on a virtual field trip to the Davis Mountains of west Texas. The content of all programs is aligned with state standards. We offer many different distance learning programs that include engaging experiences such as: take your students on a virtual tour of McDonald Observatory; complete a hands-on activity; see unique science demonstrations; and get live telescopic views of the Sun, Moon and Venus from telescopes equipped with special video cameras and solar filters.

MARCH SPOTLIGHT SESSION
Mavericks, Dogies, and Drovers--Cattle Drives
Presented by Bullock Texas State History Museum
Grades: K-7

People associate the word “cowboy” with “Texas” beginning with one specific time period in Texas history---the heyday of cattle drives. Although this era only lasted from 1866-1890, the cattle drive era shaped the image of Texas.
Who started the cattle drives, and where did the trails go? What jobs could people do on a cattle drive, and what was life on the trail like? What were the risks and benefits of driving cattle to market? Hear from a special guest speaker, an 1870s cattle driver who has traveled through time to reminisce about his cattle drive experience. Test your mapping and math skills as you learn about the trails.
Materials: A worksheet to be used during the program will be emailed in advance. We will also send an optional extension activity for you to use with your students after the presentation in which you will lead your students in a mock cattle drive using instructions and name tags that assign roles on the cattle drive.

ART + MATH + LANGUAGE ARTS ALL IN ONE PROGRAM!
Celebrate the arrival of Spring and learn the traditional art of Pysanky, Ukrainian egg decoration.
Students will read Rechenka’s Eggs, and discover connections between illustrations by author/ artist Patricia Polacco and artworks from the Old Jail Art Center’s Collection.
Each student will design their own egg in Ukrainian style, using geometric and organic designs. This project will include a review of 2D versus 3D forms, as well as the division of shapes into halves and fourths.

Eggs Everywhere

Join Leishawn Spotted Bear for a totally immersive program that will have your students observing, predicting, writing, drawing and interacting, all around eggs. Eggs are one of nature's most perfect designs and are an incredible way to learn about life cycles, adaptations and survival. We'll use simple materials like chicken eggs to bring out your student's observation skills and specimens from our teaching collection to hone their ability to predict. Throughout the session, the purpose of eggs and the different animals that lay eggs will be emphasized. Program includes a kit with materials needed for chicken egg dissection, along with other goodies for your classroom.

Chainsaws & Wildflowers: Save the Prairie

Join Park Ranger Kate to learn about the most endangered ecosystem in Texas: the Blackland Prairie. We'll go over the important plant species that make up a prairie, including its beautiful wildflowers, and also cover the ways conservationists are working to save them using methods like replanting, prescribed fire, and chainsaws.

Foxes are identified in popular culture as mischievous, tricky, and cunning animals. This program will introduce one of Texas' more common species, the gray fox. Students will learn how they came to be the tricksters of the animal world and discuss their role in the ecosystem. We will look at their body structures and their functions, their diet, their habitat, and many other fun facts along the way with the help of our animal guest star.
