A Message from the Co-Principals
Dear Hornet Families,
It is hard to believe we are entering October already. It has been a successful month, and seeing students in the classrooms and on the fields is really great. Essex High School is an amazing school with really great teachers and students!
We will be holding two information-only lockdown drills next week. While the teachers have already reviewed many emergency protocols with students, teachers will get into more detail on lockdown drill procedures. Emergency drills look different this year, with the rest of the year alternating between information-only lockdown and information-only fire drills. We held real fire drills last week, and the kids were fantastic.
Conferences are coming up next week. You should be receiving from the teachers a sign-up for a remote conference. These will occur mostly in the evening on October 8 and all day on October 9. Remember, there is no school for students on Friday, October 9, and Monday October 12.
Thank you for all you do to support Essex High School. I look forward to a wonderful fall!
Sincerely,
Tamara Parks & Don Van Nostrand

Howard Center’s World Mental Health Day Speaker Series
Howard Center will be connecting to the global world mental health movement and hosting its first annual community-wide recognition and celebration of World Mental Health Day (WMHD) throughout the month of October 2020.
This year WMHD is on October 10 and is an opportunity for community education and engagement to reduce stigma, raise awareness, and to connect to the global movement to ensure our communities have access to mental health supports when they are needed.
Join us for our weekly speaker series at howardcenter.org.

FAQ From Health Office
STEM Academy Workshop with Dr. McGinnis, UVM
The EHS STEM Academy recently held its first Zoom workshop with Dr. Ryan McGinnis and his Ph.D. student, Samantha Fox from the Electrical and Biomedical Engineering department at UVM. They led us in an interactive workshop on using mobile technologies to solve health problems. This workshop was held on Zoom. The students heard about ways that digital technology is being used to tackle current health issues, then they broke out into groups to propose their own digital solution to a health care problem. The groups presented their ideas in a rapid-fire format and the Stroke Detector app was selected as the winner. The students in this group will have the opportunity to participate in a 30-minute Zoom call with the presenters.

Driving/Parking on Campus
One of the great things about becoming a responsible young adult is the newfound freedom that comes with being able to drive to and from school.
While the opportunities are many, the responsibilities that come with being behind the wheel of an automobile are immense and extremely important. Driving an automobile is the single most dangerous thing you will do in your lifetime. Take it seriously.
You are carrying precious cargo...yourself and people you care about.
Don’t forget about the other cars and bikers and pedestrians. No one should have to fear for their life because of irresponsible driving practices. Help us out! On campus and off.
Drive slowly, safely and do the right thing!
