October Raptor Review
Schaller-Crestland Elementary Family Communication Letter
Message from Mr. Brand
September was a great month! It was very busy with homecoming and all of our dress-up days. We began Fast Assessment testing last week and we are finishing up this week. Students take tests in reading and math and then we take those same tests in the Winter and in the Spring! We have been working hard at celebrating students that are always doing the right thing and following our expectations here. One of the things I would like parents and students to start thinking about is the weather. Right now, we seem to have cool mornings and warm afternoons, as the weather gets colder please make sure that your child is prepared, as we will still go outside for recess. I look forward to October!
Preschool
There will NOT be 3 year old preschool on Wednesdays. There also will not be 4 year old preschools on the 1st Wednesday of each month.
There will not be 4 Year Old Preschool on Wednesday, October 7th.
Masks at School
The school district’s recent frustration has centered around contract tracing with healthy students removed from school for 14 days. CDC guidelines seem to change on a regular basis, and we have been informed recently that changes have been made in this area.
Please note, if a student tests positive, and that child and the students within 6 ft. of him/her have masks on, only the student with the positive test will need to quarantine for 10 days. We feel that this change allows us to keep more students engaged with face to face instruction, which is our overriding goal. Before this change, each student within 6 ft. for 15 minutes or longer, of the student who tested positive would also have to quarantine for 14 days.
So, until further notice, we will be wearing masks on a more regular basis throughout the elementary day. However, this does not mean that they will be on continuously throughout the day. Regular breaks will be taken from mask wearing, and we will continue with our practice of not wearing them during periods of physical activity like in PE or at recess and lunch. We have also been informed that the gators and shields do not meet the guidelines of being considered an effective mask. So, we would ask for your assistance in making sure your child comes to school each day with a cloth or surgical mask. We have handed out at least one cloth mask to each elementary student.
Please feel free to call if you have additional questions or concerns. Thanks for all you are doing to help us with the challenges of COVID-19!

PBIS
We celebrate students a variety of ways, see below!
- Students receive a Raptor Roar Card for demonstrating PBIS expectations: Respect, Responsible, and Safe.
Teachers draw 2 names and pick 1 student each week to get a prize from the PBIS treasure box. The teacher then totals the number of cards and adds those cards to a large box in which we do an all-school drawing at our monthly assembly. We draw 25-40 names at our monthly assembly for students to pick a larger prize. We read the student’s names on the intercom to come get their prize.
Teachers recognize students for “The Raptor Way Award” for students that have shown growth on the expectations or that are always demonstrating respect, responsible, and safe.
Once our whole school gets to 2,500 Raptor Roar Cards, we earn an all school incentive! Tomorrow, we will celebrate with a movie and popcorn in the classroom. This is our first all school incentive of the year.
We earned our all-school incentive this last week and students enjoyed movie and a popcorn on Friday. We are now working towards our next incentive!
The Great Pumpkin Project.
Box Tops and Hy-Vee Receipts (Keep it up!) We are now at a total of $45.00 since July 1!
As we begin and continue the school year, it is going to be a priority of mine to fully implement PBIS with incentives for students both individually and building wide. Additionally, it is also a priority to organize community/family events the best we can (may look a little different with COVID-19). With this in mind, we need extra sources of funding that is flexible for things like incentives, events, prizes, etc. The easiest way is through Hy-Vee receipts and Box Tops. Keep your Hy-Vee receipts from the Hy-Vee in Storm Lake, and then bring them to the school and put them in the little trash can in the office. We can get a percentage back from each receipt.
With Box tops, you can take any receipt where you might have purchased something with box tops like Wal-Mart, DG, Fareway, Hy-Vee, Sams Club etc. Then you will download the Box Tops App (see below) from your App Store. When you create your account, you will put in Schaller-Crestland Elementary. You will then link to the school, and anytime you take a picture of your receipt, it will sort it for you, and then your box tops will be recorded on the app, and it will be sent to the school. This is a great way for us to gain small funds that add up with everyone's support. If you are not already doing this, please try it!

Parent Teacher Partnership
I plan to hold a Parent Teacher Partnership meeting each month. I am going to do my best to hold this on the 1st Monday of each month at 6:00pm in the Schaller gym. This will ultimately depend on events in the gym and commitments parents may have with athletics and activities.
We look forward to as many parents joining us as possible.
Below you will find the presentation from the October 1st Parent Teacher Partnership Meeting. Let me know if you have any questions!
