Nurturing Potential, Sustaining Support
March 2020
Happy March!
We have finally turned the corner into March, and spring is on its way. Congratulations for making it through another Minnesota winter!
This month in our newsletter, we will be focusing on the goal of increasing access. Believe it or not, this is a great time to start looking into summer opportunities for your Young Scholar. With this in mind, we'll be taking a look at a variety of activities, camps, and options this summer to help increase access to resources and experiences that nurture your Young Scholar's amazing potential.

Information, Resources and Opportunities for Your Young Scholar
Summer Camps
There are a huge number of summer camps available in the Twin Cities area and throughout the state. Luckily, the StarTribune's Minnesota Summer Camp Guide allows users to search camp choices by interest, age level, price, location, and more. Camps can fill up fast, so it's not too early to take a look!
Below are three summer camp examples that might spark your Young Scholar's interest:
- Have you ever noticed your Young Scholar has a flair for drama? If so, a summer camp at Locally Grown Theatre might be just the thing! Locally Grown Theatre is a community theatre serving the Cottage Grove area with a mission, "to plant the seed of theater; to cultivate the inner artist in youth; [and] to nurture the love of theatre arts within the community..."
- The Bell Museum, a natural history museum and planetarium in St. Paul, offers summer camps for a variety of ages. To cut down the cost, be sure to check to see if any scholarships are available.
- Another cool thing about the Bell is that they offer qualifying guests and their families Curiosity Memberships for just $15 a year. Click here to read more about a Curiosity Membership.
- Adventures in Cardboard offers summer camps as well as Saturday Game Days and event bookings. Their website states their mission as, "igniting a passion for design, construction and playful exploration of the natural world."
Free (or pretty cheap) Family Fun
Having fun together with your Young Scholar is one of the best things about summer and can be a great time to increase access to resources and experiences. Here are a few ideas for free or low-cost family events around town.
- Park Grove Library in Cottage Grove has tons of kid-friendly activities planned now and all summer long. Click here to see the current event schedule running all the way through summer and beyond. Check back throughout the spring as events may be added.
- Another great way to take advantage of your local library is through the MELSA smARTpass program. With just your library card (which you can get free at any library), you have the opportunity to reserve free and/or discounted admission to a wide range of arts experiences around the Twin Cities.
- The City of Cottage Grove has a lot going on this summer! Click here for a listing of current events. Check back frequently as events are added throughout the spring.
- Free guided tours of the recently renovated Minnesota State Capitol are available throughout the summer. Times and tour information can be found on the Minnesota Historical Society website.
Summer Adventures Right at Home
Below are a few options for your Young Scholar to embark on a summer adventure without even leaving home. All while adding in a little learning, too!
- Kids' Summer Reading through the Washington County Libraries is a great way to keep your Young Scholar engaged in reading this summer. Information for this year's summer reading program isn't quite ready, but you can click here for a look into last year's activities. Check back throughout the spring for updated information on this summer's reading fun.
- Camp PBS Kids has loads of educational activities, games, and videos designed for kids, with parents in mind. Topics range from a kids' summer bucket list, craft ideas, and fun learning games.
- The website Science Fun for Everyone features an Experiments for Kids page full of fun and (mostly) easy-to-do science experiments for your curious Young Scholar to try out this summer.

About Me
Hi All!
My name is Colleen Redmond, and I am thrilled to work as the 833 Young Scholars advocate and lead teacher.
I'm a mom of two teenagers, a wife, small business owner, avid biker (the pedal kind), book enthusiast, and beekeeper. Plus, on top of all of that, I have the happy job of implementing and growing the Young Scholars program here in 833!
I've been lucky enough to teach in South Washington County Schools for over twenty-five years and have had the incredible opportunity to be a part of the lives of so many students and families over the years.
Now, as part of Young Scholars, I have the honor of working with the amazing staff, students, and families throughout 833. I am so very excited to work with and support you and your Young Scholar. I can't wait to see where the journey takes us!
