Garnet Valley CTC Quick Tip #8 2017-2018
Did you know? Powered by batteries, e-cigarettes contain a heating element that vaporizes a liquid nicotine solution when inhaled. Among middle and high school students, "vaping", as e-cigarette use is commonly called, (CDC). Findings from the National Youth Tobacco Survey showed that during that one-year period, vaping among high school students increased from 4.5 percent to 13.4 percent, a total of two million students. “Vaping has become so prevalent among U.S. high school students that it’s graduated to ‘risky behavior’ status. The fact that e-cigs and other electronic nicotine products have surged in popularity with such an impressionable age group is extremely alarming. ALL tobacco products are dangerous, and their ongoing use is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. We must shore up our efforts to stop this disturbing trend before it climbs higher and turns more young people into lifelong tobacco addicts.” American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown said in a statement.
Call to action… Talk to your teens and children about this popular trend. While vapor may seem less harmful than smoke, concerning information about the vapor from e-cigarettes is coming out each day. Vapor contains silicate particles, formaldehyde, nitrosamines and lead. Though the toxicant levels of e-cigs may be “9–450 times lower than in cigarette smoke,” levels of formaldehyde and metals have been found to be comparable to or higher than those found in conventional cigarettes. *Silicate particles, which are a cause of lung disease, have also been found in e-cigarette vapors, which are shared with everyone around them “second hand vapor”(Scientific American).
Learn all that you can for your family. Please read all of the information, which has been sent out by Dr. Bertrando and Mr. Brandt. See additional links below.

Leftover Halloween Candy Wanted
Mrs. Fecondo's 1st Grade Class will be collecting Halloween candy to donate to the USO at the Philadelphia International Airport. The candy collected will be handed out to our military personnel as they pass through our city to return home or on their way to an assignment. Candy can go a long way in putting a smile on someone's face! So if you see a great sale before or after Halloween, or if you have leftover candy at your house, please feel free to put them in the blue plastic box outside my room (161) until next the end of the day Friday, November 3.
Halloween Celebration Information
Halloween will soon be here. Halloween parades and parties will be conducted by our Teachers with support from Homeroom parents on Tuesday, October 31st. The parade for 1st and 2nd Graders will take place in the morning. Students in 1st and 2nd Grade should wear their costumes to school. Kindergarten students should bring their costumes in a bag with their name on it. Kindergarten students should be able to put their costumes on with little or no assistance. Costumes should be safe and appropriate for school, nothing violent, scary or gory in nature. Thank you for your understanding that this is a school event only and we cannot accommodate visitors for the parades and parties.
Thank you!
