Hallway Happenings PHJH Edition
11/20-11/25/23
Good Evening Patritos,
I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and were able to enjoy some downtime from the hustle and bustle of school. If you are a little behind on your studies, I am crossing my fingers and toes in hopes that you used some of the time to get yourself caught up before the November 17th midterm assignment lock.
There are so many fun happenings in the school this week, it took quite a while to get them all formatted and looking pretty, so we are going to jump right into all of the PHJH fun and save the story for next week.
We can’t wait to see all of your beautiful faces in the morning!

Fourth Annual Providence Hall Junior High Veteran's Day Program
A HUGE Thank You To Everyone Who Participated In The PHJH Veteran's Day Program
Dearest Patriots,
I have no words to be adequately express my gratitude for how each and every one of you contributed to making the Veteran's Day Program a moment to cherish.
All of the planning, practice, attention to detail, love, amazing student behavior, along with the time that all of our Veteran's and families took out of their busy life's culminated into making our fourth annual Providence Hall Junior High Veteran's Day Program nothing short of magical.
I was so grateful to have such a small part at the end of the program, as I was an absolute puddle of tears and mascara on the ground both from gratitude for the decades of selfless service that has been such a huge part of helping to provide all of the freedoms that I personally know I take for granted nearly everyday, as well as be reminded of how lucky I am to get to be part of a school and community that is as breathtaking spectacular as you all are.
Dearest Veterans

Un ENORME AGRADECIMIENTO A TODOS LOS QUE PARTICIPARON EN EL PROGRAMA DEL DÍA DE LOS VETERANOS DE PHJH
Queridos Patriotas,

Owl Pellets For The Win In Mrs. Elwell's STEM class
Interested in being a Doctor or a Veterinarian?
If your answer is yes, it is time you start to get comfortable with dissecting a variety of things...
On the dissection docket today...
Owl pellets...
In STEM class today, students were learning about owls and how they cannot digest bones and fur when they eat an animal. Owls will store what they cannot digest in their gizzard and throw up a pellet when the gizzard is full. Dissecting the owl pellets gives us an understanding of what prey owls eat.
The students dissected the pellet and identified the bones they found.
The skull identification tells the students specifically what prey that particular owl ate. The owl pellets are sterilized and dried out before they are sold. We purchased them from Carolina Biological Supply. The students still got grossed out, but then the fascination happens once they start finding bones. I was surprised how many of them wanted to take the bones home.

Mrs.Tanner's Production and Costume and Design Classes Are Making Magic At PHJH
Productions classes have been accomplishing so much over the past few weeks-- here are just a few of their projects come to fruition!
Productions 1 (Costume, Hair, and Makeup design) is all about creating characters and using visual cues to teach audiences about them. We started the year learning about costume design (culminating in a fantastic fashion show with costumes made of trash bags), where students studied fashion through the decades. Students have spent the past few weeks learning how to style hair (including ponytails, parts, braids, and pin curls) on our not-at-all-creepy mannequin heads. Now moving on to our Makeup unit, students learned what a makeup plot is and created unique designs while listening to professional makeup artists talk about their career path and process. Coming up, students will learn how to safely apply and remove stage makeup, including Special FX makeup.
Productions 2 (Set, Lighting, and Sound design) classes began with a unit on script analysis, preparing students to identify the needs of a production and aid in its storytelling. We met virtually with and learned from two professional set designers, one of whom is the current head of set construction at Scera Center for the Arts. After talking with them, students put their knowledge to the test as they constructed mini set models out of popsicle sticks and pitched their ideas for our upcoming production, Legally Blonde jr. Coming up, students will learn about lighting and sound design as it applies to our very own school, helping to prepare our amazing stage for assemblies and evening concerts by setting up microphones and lights.
