Formative Assessment & Data in One Handy Tool

Here's How It Works:

First, go to and sign up for a free account. Here's how it works: Each student has a Plicker card, they look like QR Codes with each side representing a different answer (A, B, C or D). You create assessment questions on the website, display them to your class, then use your device to scan student answers. It is really that easy!

Ok, I can hear you now, "I don't have time to go around to every single student and scan their cards" That is why this app is so great, you don't have to walk around and scan each student's card. You should be able to stand in front of your room and scan every single response and this should all take no more than 30 seconds!

Here's How...

First go to and sign up for an account. You'll also need to download the app on your iPad or smartphone so that you can scan student responses.

After you sign up, go to CLASSES, and click ADD A NEW CLASS.

Type in all of your students. You will have to assign each student a number. This number will be printed on the Plicker card, so you'll need to know which student you've assigned to which number.

Once you've created your class you can print your Plicker cards. You'll go to the option CARDS. There are different options for cards, but the standard set has 40 cards, so it will be more than adequate for your classes. Click the Standard Plickers Card Set option and it will download into a PDF for you to print. I suggest printing it on heavier paper and then maybe having those cards laminated so they will last.

Create your questions. As you type in the answer choices, check the box to choose the correct answer. If you only want to have 3 answer choices, click the X next to the D and you can delete answer D as a choice. You can also switch to True/False at the top if you want that type of question. When you're finished with the question, click Save.

Once you have saved your question you will want to add it to your plan. Click +Add to Queue and then choose your class.

Now that you've created questions and downloaded the app, you're ready to use them with your students! Simply pull up the Plickers website on your Smartboard and click LIVE VIEW. Then, using your iPad, choose the question you want students to answer and it will immediately change the screen that your class sees. Students hold up their cards while you scan responses, and that's it!

Getting everything set up will take about 30 minutes. Once you have everything ready to go, you can create questions on the website in a matter of minutes. Ann Dvorak originally showed me this app, she has been using it in her classes for some time. I'd love to hear from some of you who want to try it out! Let me know if there's any questions I can answer for you!
