The Literacy Shed in Lisburn
Enhancing Reading and Writing through film
Rob Smith - Literacy Shed Founder
Rob Smith set up The Literacy Shed from his dining room table in 2012 whilst teaching full time in a primary school in the North West of England. From blogging about the films he was using with his class, to a site filled with 300+ short films and animations, the website has gone from strength to strength.
Rob now travels the world evangelising about the use of film and image in the classroom and how they can benefit reading and writing practice.
In his talks, Rob demonstrates how film and image can help ignite a passion for writing whilst modelling and scaffolding the process. He shows his audience that film can aid comprehension skills such as inference, deduction, prediction and more.
Rob’s techniques are now being used in 1000s of schools around the world and are having a positive impact upon the children whose teachers use them.
St Aloysius Primary School, Lisburn
I am very excited to be coming back to Northern Ireland this Summer and visiting Lisburn for the first time.
The CPD day is split into four sessions and is aimed at Primary School teachers, Literacy Coordinators and anyone interested in embedding film into English lessons to enhance the teaching of reading, writing and speaking.
8:45 - 9:15 Refreshments and Registration.
9:15 - 11:00 Exploring the benefits of film for reading and writing.
In this session, Rob will explore a range of still and moving image media, demonstrating their value to the reading and writing process through analysis and questioning. The session will look at how a director’s choice to portray something can be used by teachers to inspire discussions and hook students in.
11:00 - 11:20 Break and refreshments
11:20 - 12:30 Setting a good example.
In this session, Rob will show how film and image can be used to teach writing techniques such as portraying character emotion, building tension and creating atmosphere as well providing a wealth -of content for both fiction and non-fiction writing.
12:30 - 1:15 Lunch
1:15 - 2:00 Taking Grammar to the movies.
In this session, participants will experience how film can be used in the teaching of grammar. Through discussion and demonstration Rob will share useful activities that use film alongside teacher modelling to enhance the teaching of the grammar curriculum and embed it within the teaching of reading, writing and speaking.
2:00 - 3:00 Film story scaffolds.
Films tell a story; in this session Rob will demonstrate how the stories told in films can be used as scaffolds to help students create their own narratives. Rob will explain how films can be broken down into scenes and shots and what role each of these has within the narrative.
