Principal's Message
Flu and cold season is here! Please remind students of the importance of coughing in one's elbow and washing hands before eating, especially when using shared classroom tools. If you child has a fever please do keep them home. Remember to call their illness in on our attendance line:(707) 792-4840
There are many important dates coming up the next three weeks so please read through to the end of this newsletter and mark your calendars. You should have received an email and hard copy calendar for February. We truly are working to be green so please check your emails and texts. If you are not receiving texts and would like to start receive text messages, text the word "Yes" or the letter "Y" from your mobile phone to 67587. This will activate the text message alerts. This truly is the best way to send you information. You can always check our website for a calendar of events on the website too.
Garden Program Update
Garden classes started up again this month so all students are back in the garden every week! When rain prevents an outdoor class the garden teachers move inside. Our focus this month is designing our new habitat garden area. We have received an irrigation and plants grant through the Garden Network in conjunction with Harmony Gardens in Sebastopol. This is based upon the PBL project designing wildlife habitats for different critters and insects. We are also generating ideas for what to plant this spring, and tasting winter greens (Veggie of the Month) growing in the garden right now. We have collected $6,100 in student donations and garden donations from produce earlier on. We are currently almost $2,000 short of our fundraising goal but if all families donate the requested $40 amount we will be able to meet our goal and have garden classes for the remainder of the year. Please join us on Sunday, April 28th from 12-3 for our Garden Celebration event held in our school garden area. There will be info booths, spring inspired crafts, music, games, and veggie starts for sale.
Earth Savers Club
UELF has a new student-led club that is ready to change the world! The Earth Savers Club began their lunchtime meeting this month. Our first lunchtime meeting was held last Friday and was a great success. With over 20 enthusiastic members in grades 2nd-5th, the plan is to open it up to younger students if we can get enough parent volunteers. Our lead parent volunteer for this Club is Sybil Halloran. Please contact her at sybilmaria44@gmail.com or Mrs. Straub for more information on the Club or if you would like to volunteer. The club meets once a week on Fridays during lunch and has begun outlining plans to take collective action around environmental stewardship and education. The exciting activities the Earth Savers are working on include: school-wide recycling and composting, wildlife habitat creation, litter abatement, keeping storm drains pollutant free, worm rescue, and peer-to-peer education. We can't wait to see what the Earth Savers do!
