Health Room News
Head lice is common among school age children. Check for head lice frequently by making it a part of routine hygiene practice. If your child has an itchy scalp and is scratching, you need to check for head lice right away and treat if found. Nits or head lice eggs are often mistaken for dandruff, but nits adhere to the hair shaft and will not flake off. Adult lice are greyish-white and about the size of a sesame seed and are spread by head to head contact or contact with a shared item, like a hair brush, comb, scarf, or hat. Please inform the school nurse if your child has head lice. Head lice treatment is required to get rid of them. Additional head lice information can be found on the district website under School Health Services listed as "Head Lice Information for Parents".
Immunization Notice
In keeping compliance with the South Carolina Code of Laws, school nurses must ensure each student enrolled in their schools have a compliant immunization certificate on file. According to the law those who are not in compliance are to be given 30 days to comply or otherwise be excluded from school until compliance is met. If you have received or receive a notice from me, please take care of the matter and provide a compliant South Carolina Certificate of Immunization to the school as soon as possible. Check with your child's doctor or you may call the central line at DHEC to make an appointment to resolve the issue. That phone number is (855) 472-3432.
Vision and Hearing Screening Follow Up
Screenings were done September 27 on kindergarten, first, third, fifth, and second and fourth graders who are new to district 5. If screening results were within normal limits, you did not receive a letter from me. However, a referral letter was or will be sent if your child's results were outside of normal limits. These results indicate need for further professional examination. School nurses are required to do follow up documentation regarding those with screenings outside of normal limits. Please make an appointment with the appropriate health care provider (eye or hearing) as soon as possible. Request a copy of the report and promptly provide it to the school nurse. School screenings are not meant to take the place of an examination by a health care provider. A primary goal of the health screening program is to detect potential problems that could affect the learning process and to have those particular problems resolved. Continue to take your child for regularly scheduled visits with his/her health care provider.
Dental screenings for only third grade students are a regular part of the screening process and was scheduled to be done September 27 as well. These screenings were not done, but will still be done at a later date.
Thank You PTO
A huge thank you goes out again to PTO and all other parents and staff members who graciously assisted with the screening process. You took care of the students and provided the nurses with tasty snacks and a great lunch to top it off. You all were awesome and we could not have done it without you.
Please contact Bobbie Boulware, school nurse at 476-4009, if you have any questions or concerns.
