PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Greetings Frog Pond Families,

Hopefully May will finally bring us the warm weather we expect for Spring. We begin the month with PARCC testing for our students in grades 3 through 6. Please be sure your students arrive to school on time and well rested.

Other events happening this month are our ever popular Reading Rocks Assembly, the band and chorus spring concert, Jump Rope for Heart Assembly, and our first annual Art Show. The 6th grade trip is scheduled for May 30th and our field days will be May 30th and 31st.

We will welcome our new grade 4-6 families from George J. Mitchell with two open house opportunities on May 29th. Parents and Guardians are invited at 9:00am and students are welcome to accompany parents at 6:00pm. We are excited to welcome our new families for the next school year and anticipate a smooth and successful transition.

I would like to remind our families that we have an open door policy here at the “pond” and encourage you to reach out to your child’s teacher or the school administration with any questions or concerns.

Until next month, thank you for sharing your children with us.

Mrs. Morgan's 2nd Grade Habitat Study

In science, Mrs. Morgan's students discussed how animals need certain things in their habitat to survive. Students had to attempt to replicate a forest habitat in order to keep pill bugs alive. We researched what pillbugs eat, and how they like to live. Then we went outside, collected our materials and built a habitat in a cup. We added potatoes (pillbugs like potatoes) to increase our chances for their survival. Each day we took notes and sprayed the habitats with a gentle mist to keep it moist (a pillbug's need). After a week we took out our pillbugs and 23 were still alive!!!! We discussed why we thought the other two didn’t make it (too wet....pill bugs like moisture but not mud). One pill bug was even shedding his exoskeleton!!!! Finally we released the bugs back into their natural habitat where they have more room to live!

The Quail Are Here!

Mrs. Sailer’s 6th grade science classes are observing the growth of a native species, the northern bobwhite quail. Today, 123 eggs were placed in an incubator with a temperature of 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit. The eggs will hatch in 22-24 days, so we will have chicks in early May! Besides observing the quails, Mrs. Sailer’s science students will also be involved in the care of the chicks. All of the students and staff are invited anytime during the day to see the eggs and the chicks when they hatch. The “Quail Ambassadors” will tell visiting classes current facts about the quail and answer any questions. Native species rule!

Art Contest Winner!

On May 2, 2018, Mrs. Worosz's student, Alexis Mackow will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Toms River. She is our school's 5th grade winner of the calendar art contest for Mental Health Awareness for Ocean County. Alexis' artwork will appear in their next calendar. Congratulations, Alexis!

Frog Pond Rocks!

The rock garden was a school-wide project to create a colorful stone lined path outside the school entrance. It was inspired by the book "Only One You" by Linda Kranz, and decorated by the students of Frog Pond Elementary School and their parents at the Fall Open House with teachers Mrs. Lupo, Mrs. Clarici and Mrs. Cucinello and with Mr. Paige and his all his art students K-6

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

Congratulations Donna Majchrzak!

Miss Donna from the Ocean County Library is a regular visitor to the Frog Pond School. Not only has she provided many after school reading programs for our students, she has also made special visits to Kindergarten to share stories and provide them with the forms to apply for their very own library cards! We are fortunate to have Miss Donna visit all of our students in June to discuss the Ocean County Library's Summer Reading Program and the many other activities they offer. A very special thank you goes out to her for all she does for our school!
