Curriculum Nights!
Each year our dedicated teachers and PTA have an opportunity to share how Osborne Middle provides our students an exciting and enriched curriculum focused on learning. Our goal is for each parent to walk away with a glimpse of the timetables, routines and learning that will be offered throughout the school year. Teachers will also spend time discussing homework, organizational expectations, eClass, and materials students need to bring to school. Parents will receive a handout upon entering the school with directions of where to report. We hope you will make plans to spend time with us at Curriculum Night 2019!

Summer Reading Celebration
7th Grade Math Placement
For the 2019-20 school year, Osborne Middle School used a combination of teacher recommendations in conjunction with the GCPS Guidance for Accelerating Students in Mathematics when considering placement for students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade standard and accelerated math classes. While we recognize that all students are capable of mastering the AKS at high levels of rigor, we also acknowledge that some students require more time for mastery of the content than others. In particular, we find that many students struggle with the rapid pace of the 7th grade accelerated course, which covers a year and a half worth of math content over two semesters. As such, teacher recommendations for placement into 7th and 8th grade math classes were based on students’ progress and achievement in their math class for the previous school year. A combination of the semester 1 and 2 final averages, formative data, common, district and state assessment scores, student work ethic and careful consideration of the student's ability to master new content at a rapid pace were used to determine placement.
In anticipation of preparing all students for success in Algebra I, the GCPS district math office has increased the rigor of the 7th grade standard math curriculum for the coming year with the identification and inclusion of 8 essential AKS students must know as they prepare for Algebra 1 in 8th grade. These additional AKS standards provide students with an introduction and foundational understanding of solving linear equations both algebraically and graphically; graphing and comparing proportional relationships; and evaluating and solving expressions and equations using radicals and integer exponents.
We feel confident that we have placed each student in the class he/she will be most successful in, and we look forward to supporting all students this year. Please be sure to speak with your teacher if you have any additional questions.

· Periodicals are available for use in the Media Center.
The Student Portal and the Media Center
Students may access the media catalog and the Online Research Library databases through the Student Portal.
The Media Center is open for student checkout from 8:55 AM-3:55 PM every day. Students may visit the Media Center during homeroom and throughout the day with a signed teacher pass. Language Arts teachers bring their students on a rotating two- to three-week schedule. Students are also permitted to come to the Media Center to work on research assignments, makeup work, and to take tests as long as they have a signed teacher pass detailing the student’s purpose.
Students check out books by entering their student numbers. Media Center staff and volunteers attempt to verify each student’s identity before checking out a book to him/her to ensure that mistakes in checkouts are avoided. Students return books to a bin at the Circulation Desk inside the Media Center. The Media Center staff makes every effort to scan every book for damage before checking in the books and taking them off of a student’s account and re-shelving the book. If the student has a damaged book, the Media Center staff will speak to the student within 48 hours.
The Media Center staff runs overdue reports every Thursday; at that time, an email is sent to the homeroom teacher and the parent of record notifying them of the student’s overdue account. Once a student’s book has been overdue for thirty days, the system will mark that book “Lost” and issue the student a fine for the replacement cost of the book. If the student is due a refund for any reason, the student will show up on this report until the refund is made; however, the amount appears in parentheses indicating it is a refund and not a fine.
Fines may be paid by check or cash in the Media Center or by credit/debit card online through MyPaymentsPlus. Refunds for fines paid in check or cash will be paid by check from GCPS; because of Gwinnett County Public Schools’ procedures, the refund process may take up to a month. Refunds for items paid through MPP will be issued to the same account.
