COVID Updates
Many of our parents are having difficulty loading their test results onto the Daily Pass creating inconsistencies with our information. I will continue to input information on your staff roster and provide a copy for your on Monday. Remember that if students tested positive, they will not take another PCR test for 3 months. The antigen test will only be used for asymptomatic students after five days of quarantine. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you all for your professionalism and commitment to Malabar during these stressful times.

Reminders from our TSP Advisor-Juan Carrillo
Hello Malabar Teachers and staff,
First of all, thank you for all your support in completing the School Experience Survey for this year. Here are the final completion rates for Malabar: Staff-91% completion rate, Students--74% completion rate and a whopping 91% completion rate for parents. Looks like we will be having many ice cream party celebrations. Some of the questions in the surveys are connected to our SPSA plan so the more Malabar participates, the better.
Also, budget development for Title I is just around the corner. I will be meeting with ELAC parents this week to start working on the SPSA budget plan for next year. We will be developing new goals for the plan and soon we will be meeting with teachers to get your input as well.
Finally, things have been tough but let's all hang in there and support each other and we will get through this. Thanks Malabar!
Updates from our Title III Coach-Ricardo Melendez
Designated Frame of Practice
How will you deliver lessons based Part II ELD Standards (Learning about How English Works) supported by Part I ELD Standards (Interacting in Meaningful Ways) this week?
- Designated Frame of Practice lessons can be found at https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/8773#spn-content under resources
- You can develop your own lesson (lesson template can be found in Malabar’s Google shared drive in the ELD folder)
- You can use Benchmark dELD and add a constructive conversation task about the language feature you are targeting.
Our English Learners need ample opportunities to able to develop an understanding of how English works. Please contact me if you would like to plan and co-teach a lesson.
Note: I will be conducting class observations during dELD to support your implementation of best practices, constructive conversations, and the Designated Frame of Practice.
2021-2022 SPSA Measurable Goal
By June 2022, English Learners scoring proficient (Overall Level 4) on ELPAC will increase from 7% to 30% as measured by the Summative ELPAC assessment.
News from our STEAM Coach-Angela Muro
Hello Malabar Colleagues,
I hope you are all staying healthy and safe this month. Even though we are all feeling the strain of this spike in the pandemic and we have been bombarded with “to-dos,” I just wanted to touch upon our instructional expectations. Please take a moment from your busy schedule to reflect on these 3 STEAM Instructional Expectations that Ms. Gutierrez shared with us during our Pupil-Free day:
· Engage in scientific inquiry by asking and answering questions to promote science and engineering practices.
· Use interactive digital writing journals via Google Slides to record student learning and investigations.
· Create digital STEAM portfolios that reflect STEAM instruction, investigations, and engineering projects for each IIS unit of study.
When I look at the first bullet, I feel that we are getting better at engaging our students in discourse. We are making progress. When I look at the other two bullets, I’m not sure that we are all onboard with “digital” journals and portfolios. As we continue with our 2nd trimester and STEAM unit, think of ways that you can incorporate these items in your classroom and your personal/professional library. If you need support and/or your grade level would like to meet to implement these digital tools, please email me. or come by Room 5.
Reminders from our Intervention Coordinator-Vanessa Chavez
Hello Teachers,
First off, I want to start by saying, thank you for your patience and understanding through this time of uncertainty. Hopefully, things start getting back to normal and I can continue to work with my small groups. In the meantime, please continue with Literacy Academy groups as best you can. Small group instruction is important to support the reading needs of the students. Since attendance is an issue at this moment, it would be a great idea to post Fluency/Maze passages onto Schoology so that students can practice while at home. If you need assistance on how to upload passages from our Malabar drive onto Schoology, click the link below. (It's 7 min...sorry🤨) Have a great week. Stay Safe!😷

Hello Teachers,
Our Professional Development for Tuesday, February 8th will be dedicated to analyzing DIBELS 8 MOY DATA. Therefore, all DIBELS 8 Assessments should be administered by Friday, February 4th. Keep in mind that DIBELS MAZE in grades 2-6 is done individually online by each student. At our P.D. on Tuesday, February 8th, we will focus on grouping our students to differentiate instruction in small groups and plan for lessons to meet those student needs. I am here to support! Please reach out to me for questions or concerns.

Focus on Classroom Observations-Standard 3: Delivery of Instruction
As we visit classrooms, we will be focusing on the following two elements:
3b2. Discussion Techniques and Student Participation Techniques are used to ensure that all students share their thinking around challenging questionsEffective Practice: Teacher uses intentional, differentiated strategies to engage all students in discussion, attempting gradual release from teacher-directed to student initiated conversation. Students participate in intellectually challenging discussions.
3c1. Standards-Based Projects, Activities and Assignments Standards-aligned learning activities cognitively engage students in the lesson
Effective Practice: Instructional projects, activities and assignments are aligned to the instructional standards, require higher levels of thinking, are culturally relevant, and may include real-world application. Most students are cognitively engaged, constructing their own understanding and exploring content. The learning activities are differentiated, as necessary, to meet the learning needs of student subgroups.
During the month of January, I will be observing math and ELD instruction. The focus of the observation will be on opportunities for student discourse. I will schedule the observations based on your instructional schedules to ensure that I have enough time in the classroom to observe multiple opportunities for students to engage in discussion protocols.
