Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: El Día de Muertos, (Day of the Dead)
El Día de Muertos, or the Mexican Day of the Dead Festival, shares similarities with Halloween, including some similar practices, from decorating with pictures of skeletons, to ghoulishly shaped sweets, like the famous pan de muertos (bread of the dead) or the sugar calaveras (skulls). El Día de los Muertos is celebrated not only in Mexico, but also in neighboring countries all across Latin America, as well as in the United States.
The celebration includes an invitation for the dead to return to their family home for a visit. Families welcome them back by placing photographs of their deceased loved ones on altars, and may even write and dedicate poems to them. The celebration includes offerings of drinks and food for the deceased placed alongside their photographs and poems. Another traditional practice is the making of the sugar, colorful calaveras (skulls), decorated and labeled with names of people. The ritual has special significance for those who have lost a loved one during the previous year, since the festival provides a way of coming to terms with their departure.
The creation of the altar is an integral part of the celebration, with many of the ceremonial objects and familiar signature items of Mexican culture to many outside of the country. Altars are often decorated with flowers, whose brief life span is meant to be a reminder of the brevity of life and whose bright, earthly colors are believed to be a guide for the dead back to their loved ones. Personal possessions of deceased relatives are placed on an altar. Finally, the well-known calaveras that take their place on the altar are representations of skeletons participating in the activities of the living, like cooking, dancing, or even playing in mariachi bands.

Introducing Mrs. Washington. . .
Hello families. I am Reeceville's Title 1 Reading Specialist. I have taught in the CASD for 33 years. I was a first-grade teacher for twelve years at Friendship Elementary School before accepting the reading specialist position I've been enjoying for the past two decades.
Virtually I have been supporting first and second grade teachers during their live reading, writing and phonics lessons. Following the completion of the Acadience assessments, I'll begin small group instruction in grades 1 and 2.
I have a great love for literacy. In the coming weeks I will share some tips for you to help your child develop not just reading and writing skills, but also a love of literacy. I look forward to meeting you in the near future. If you have questions regarding literacy or reading development, you may contact me by email at washingtonp@casdschools.org.

Kindergarter, Sophia Kanabarow's, Reading Box
Sophia Kandabarow decorated her Reading Box to hold all the class stories for Reading Workshop! She completed over an hour of reading on EPIC. Sophia told the class today, "I love Epic because I love READING!" Mrs. Bolko is excited to have her in her class! Keep on reading!
Fifth Grade Readers Reflect on Their Reading Lives!
This book "buzz" marks the culmination of our fiction unit. Students have learned to set reading goals and make work plans for their daily reading workshop sessions. They have learned many strategies that good readers do; making mental movies, summarizing, asking higher level prediction questions, and more!!! To celebrate the end of this great reading work, students created book "buzzes" to recommend their books to their classmates.

21st Century After School Program
Hello Reeceville Elementary Families!!!!
My name Ms.Claudette, and I am the Program Coordinator with the 21st Century After School Program at Reeceville Elementary. This school year we would like to share some exciting news and tell you all about some new learning experiences that is going to be offered to your child(ren).
Like many schools throughout Chester County, classes are being offered remotely/virtually. Many teachers have begun to incorporate new tools and resources into their daily lessons. And students are experiencing new methods of learning which has an important, lasting impact on their educational experience. Throughout this transition, it has become very apparent that with the required physical distance between teachers and students, it is more important than ever to find ways to connect with students and keep them actively engaged, motivated and safe within the virtual learning experience.
I am excited to share with you that the 21st Century will be offering a virtual after school program. Our program will be operating Monday through Thursday. During this time your child will be provided with academic support that will assist with daily school assignments, extension activities and/or homework. Our program will also provide STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and Social Emotional Learning Enrichment.
Our 21st Century teachers will also be utilizing the Matific, educational math program. This program has over 1,500 interactive and engaging math activities and lessons. It is one of the most effective ways to help children learn the fundamentals of mathematics. Implementing Matific is an EXCELLENT way to help boost “math confidence” within children, while turning screen time into learning time.
If you would like your child to participate in the 21st Century Virtual After School Program, please feel free to contact me:

I look forward to speaking with all of you and starting this new and exciting school year!!
