Counseling Corner - Parenting a Teenager

Parenting a Teenager: The toughest and most rewarding job there is!
Some thoughts from Dr. Ken Ginsburg, renowned professor of Pediatrics and author of “Raising Kids to Thrive”:
Do you remember a time when your sweet, innocent young child looked up to you and wanted to be with you all the time? Now as a teenager, not so much? Does your teen often want you to be invisible, or criticize you for being overbearing or “out of touch”?
That can be one of the most difficult parts of parenting: the teen rebellious years. Don’t fret, because as challenging as it is, it is quite normal in most circumstances.
This is the time in their life when they are establishing their own individual identity apart from the home. They are trying to answer the question: “Who am I?” and the answer they come up with, at least at first is: “Not my mom or dad!”
Developing into an adult is a stressful process, and must be done in large part on their own as they are preparing to “leave the nest”. If the nest is too comfortable, they may not develop the courage to leave, so the friction between parent and child is life’s way of making it easier on both the parent and child for the teen to leave home.
Teens are often uncomfortable with how much they love their parent, so they push those feelings away in their quest for independence. Don’t worry, they will remember how much they love you after they learn to fly on their own.
A healthy balance of being present in your teen’s life, but creating some space for them to grow is critical. Think of being a parent as similar to the function of a lighthouse: Ever-present and available for guidance, but it doesn’t steer the boat!
