Peter Quail, You Will Be Missed!
Message from Jeff and Yolanda
A nurse anesthetist by trade, highly skilled, organized, intelligent he was a deeply profound influence for so many of our students. Peter LOVED teaching and watching students grow in their knowledge, competency and self confidence. It is the latter for which he will be remembered the most. He taught life lessons in his classes, offering students a chance to understand themselves as much as the material. The insight came with kindness, compassion, understanding and humor, lots of humor! Peter would tell his classes to be proud about this education and to boldly declare, "I went to Lorenzo Walker and I know stuff!"
Peter was feeding another passion of his, traveling with his wife Judy when he became ill. He was on a European river cruise and had been sending email from Buda and Pest and Bulgaria promising tales of his accessing health care in foreign countries. Perhaps it is fitting after all, for one so talented in his instructional delivery, to pass from this life as he did in Vienna, Austria. Adding to the history of the region by being another 'notable' to pass on in the footsteps of Mozart, Beethoven and Freud. Peter Quail, you will be missed!
In honor of Peter Quail's love for our students and his constant support for students to move forward with other technical careers, a scholarship will be created to help students enrolled in a Phlebotomy class to defray the costs associated with a health science program of their choice. Anyone wishing to donate in Peter's memory may do so at the school store.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving is one of our favorite holidays because it reminds us to give thanks and to count our blessings. Suddenly, so many things become so little when we realize how fortunate we are to live in Southwest Florida. Hope you have a restful Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Writing to Monitor Comprehension
If you pass one of our English teachers in the hallway, you might just notice there is something on their minds. Yes, it is almost that time. In February, the testing season begins for our 9th grade, 10th grade, and non-passing 11th grade students. While we work hard to prepare them for the first of these tests, the Text-Based Writing portion of the FSA, we always worry that it isn’t quite enough.
Text-based writing is just like it sounds; it is writing based on the accompanying text. It is really just an extension of what often occurs in all content classrooms; read this section of the text and answer the following short answer questions. Students read the text, and then use the information they learned in the text to answer questions. Students are expected to reference the text in their answer and provide reasoning behind the evidence chosen. The last part of that sentence is the tricky part. Students must provide the reasoning, or thinking, that led them to choose that particular piece of evidence. In our analysis of writing and formative assessments, our students struggle to elaborate or provide reasoning in their writing.
This is where you come in. Not only will you be helping student prepare for the FSA, you will also be helping them with the comprehension of your content. Writing in content areas benefit student learning in all curriculum areas because when we write, we deepen and expand our understanding. So, one format that works across all content areas and helps students build their reasoning skills is the CER model. The CER model is made up of claim, evidence, and reasoning. Students write their claim, or the direct response to the question. They then provide evidence, information that will support the claim. Finally, students provide reasoning or their explanation of how their evidence supports the claim.
There are many models of the CER process available on the internet. Here are a couple of links to explore:

Wellness Check
Wellness Check
Seriously! I ate WHAT?
A 2014 study from the University of Utah shows the average American consumes 4,500 calories and nearly 230 g of fat on Thanksgiving Day. That amount is more than twice the calories and more than three times the fat of the recommended daily allowance.
Did you know that 1 cup of bread stuffing has 17 grams of fat? Guess how much glazed carrots have? 1 cup has 12 g of fat! We all love Thanksgiving day desserts! I’m going to stick with pumpkin pie (no whipped cream, well, maybe a little) having 1/8 of a slice of 9” pie having 15 g of fat compared to the same size slice of pecan pie at 21g! Remember: be mindful!
Enjoy the holidays! Make exercise part of the celebration. Work off that dessert by taking a walk before or after the meal! Put some music on and dance!
