A Note from Mrs. Shook
Well, they just announced that we aren't coming back until May 15th. I am trying to wrap my mind around what this look like, especially for gifted kids. I feel like it is going to be important for you to find topics that interest you and help you enrich yourself. The packets provided are great review but now you have to be creative with how you find things to learn.
So for instance, I have been doing some family history research with my children on ancestory.com. We have talked about what a census is and looked at some from the past. How cool is it to look at primary sources?
Maybe you are interested in birds, coding, or writing a novel. Now is your time to do it! I am considering starting a genius hour project for those of you who are interested.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Shook

Frank Kenan Children’s Essay Contest
March 16, 2020
This year, as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Landfall Foundation, the Foundation Board is establishing the Frank Kenan Children’s Essay Contest in honor of the founder of the Landfall Foundation. Submissions will be welcome from children ages 8 through 14 years, who reside within Landfall and the greater Wilmington area. We hope that you will encourage your children, grandchildren and the children of your friends and neighbors to participate.
The winner of each age group will receive the newly established Frank Kenan Vision in Giving Award, as well as $100. The winners will be announced in late May, and the essays will also be included in a future issue of Intracoastal Living.
This year’s theme is The Act of Giving. We are looking for budding writers to craft an essay in which they can describe an “act of giving” in which they have participated or one which they may have witnessed. It should describe how the act affected the recipient’s and/or the giver’s life. Oftentimes, giving can profoundly benefit both those who receive and those who give.
Some samples of possible story ideas are as follows:
My family adopted a rescue pet who had a hard life before we adopted him. It has changed our family in these ways...
My grandfather spilled his groceries at the store exit. A teenager helped him re-bag his groceries and they ended up sitting on a bench and learning about each other. This helped me appreciate…
I volunteered at an event/particular organization, and it has changed me because….and helped me realize...
When I broke my arm, my classmates carried my lunch for me, and I realized….
During the hurricane, my neighbor’s house was damaged and…
My school was a recipient of a grant, and we used the money to…
Every year, my school hosts a fundraiser for…., and it’s important because…..
Each essay should be between 500 and 750 words and 1-3 pages single spaced.
Age groups are 8-10, 11-12, and 13-14.
Due Date: Friday, April 17, 2020.
Essays should be emailed to Bo Rosser at rosser@landfallfoundation.org.
The essays will be independently reviewed by the Landfall Writer’s Group.
In your e-mail, please list the child’s name, title of the essay and age group to which the child belongs. The essay should be sent as a PDF file attachment to your email. Please DO NOT include the child’s name on the attached essay. Bo Rosser will then assign an identifier code to each essay, so that each essay can be judged without the reviewer knowing who has written the essay
Please know that we greatly appreciate your ongoing support of the Landfall Foundation and for supporting the creativity of our local children!
