NSHS Counselor Connection
2018-2019 Quarter Two Edition
Adopt A Family 2018
For the 18th consecutive year, NSHS is participating in the Greater Woonsocket Area Adopt a Family program. This drive was started by a former NSHS student to help those in need. Important details are below.
• We will meet with all seniors during advisory on November 20th and with juniors during advisory on November 21st. Gifts will be due back to the high school on Friday, November 30th with delivery to adopt a family the next week.
• Please provide only new clothing and toys. We are unable to accept used items of any kind.
• Please do not purchase bicycles for the children. Although they are fun to purchase, and receive, they are quite cumbersome to transport and store, especially for many of our Recipients.
• We recommend leaving the tags on articles of clothing, and providing gift receipts in an envelope. This will allow your Family to make even exchanges, if necessary.
• Please do not include food baskets, as these are available to Recipients through a separate program.
• All gifts must be wrapped.
• The tag with the family number must be on the gift.
Financial Aid Night at North Smithfield High School
Financial Aid Night has been scheduled for Thursday, November 1, 2018, at 6:30 PM in the North Smithfield High School Library.
This workshop is sponsored by the Guidance Department and the Rhode Island Association of Financial Aid Officers. Ms. Ricci Emerick, from the Rhode Island Student Loan Authority will offer a two-part program on financial aid for both seniors and their parent(s) or guardian(s). The first section of the program will provide a general overview of the current status of financial aid. The remainder of the program will be a step-by-step explanation of completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE that is required by some schools.
If your child is planning to enter a university, college, community college, or a post-secondary trade or technical school after their senior year, you are encouraged to attend this program.

PSAT Results
Students will receive 2018 PSAT/NMSQT scores in December via email. When they get the email confirmation that scores are ready, they need to create a College Board account and use the access code from the email to view scores. If they have an account already, they just need to log in to view them.
NSHS School Counselors will hold a student review session just before or after the holiday break. A Parent review session will be announced later.
Career of the Day
Each day, we are releasing a career of the day to students via morning announcements and google classroom. An example is below:
Environmental Scientists and Specialists
What Environmental Scientists and Specialists Do
Environmental scientists and specialists use their knowledge of the natural sciences to protect the environment and human health. They may clean up polluted areas, advise policymakers, or work with industry to reduce waste.
Environmental scientists and specialists work in offices and laboratories. Some may spend time in the field gathering data and monitoring environmental conditions firsthand. Most environmental scientists and specialists work full time.
How to Become an Environmental Scientist or Specialist
Environmental scientists and specialists need at least a bachelor’s degree in a natural science or science-related field for most entry-level jobs.
The median annual wage for environmental scientists and specialists was $68,910 in May 2016.
Employment of environmental scientists and specialists is projected to grow 11 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations. Heightened public interest in the hazards facing the environment, as well as the increasing demands placed on the environment by population growth, is expected to spur demand for environmental scientists and specialists.
