TOP STORY: H-F Resiliency Project Info Meeting is Tonight (Sept. 7)
This project focuses on proactive intervention to identify and address students' at-risk indicators before they become severe problems, while also increasing their protective factors. In addition to covering the standard social and emotional learning indicators, the tool H-F will use also measures risk factors (depression, anxiety, victimization, ostracism) and protective factors (resiliency, grit, hope). Measuring both is critical — reducing even one risk indicator can improve academic performance 20%, and strengthening one protective factor can cut those risks by half.

Children's Play: Tickets Now on Sale
Join H-F Theatre for this year's children's show, Miss Nelson is Missing, based on the beloved children’s book of the same name! Miss Nelson (Emma Leak) can't control her crazy classroom because she's just too nice. But when she disappears, her replacement is the hard-as-nails, detention-loving, recess-canceling, homework-overloading substitute teacher Viola Swamp! With the big test approaching, the kids suddenly realize how much they miss Miss Nelson and they'll do anything — including hiring a private eye, Detective McSmogg (Maleeyah Daggett) — to solve the mystery of her disappearance and bring her back. The show will run in the Mall Auditorium at 7 p.m. on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30; a matinee is offered at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1. Tickets ($10/adult, $5/student/senior) are available now online. Click here to reserve your seats today!

Important Health Reminders
We are so happy to have our students back in person this school year! An important step to keeping school on track is to be sure to stay at home if you are not feeling well, especially if you are having COVID-19 symptoms or suspect you have COVID-19. If a student is COVID-19 positive:
- Parents/guardians, please complete the District 233 COVID-19 Reporting Form (click here).
- The reporting form will be filtered through the Nurses' Office.
- Students will be coded "COVID" in the Attendance Office for 5 days.
- Students can access work and assignments from teachers through Google Classroom (no remote or virtual learning is available this year).
- After 5 days, a student may return if symptoms have improved without a negative test.
- After 5 days, if a student is still too ill to return to school, parents/guardians must call the Attendance Office (708-799-3000, press 2) to excuse the absence.
Unfortunately, there are other communicable illnesses that should also be reported to the Nurses' Office. Please click here to read this resource regarding teens and monkeypox.
Free Tutoring Begins This Week
Free tutoring services are now available for all H-F students in the following subjects: Math, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Chinese, French, Spanish, Music and Writing. In-person tutoring is offered before and after school, plus some sessions are available online through Google Classroom. To view the complete schedule, please click here or check out the Events Calendar in your H-F FYI each week.
College Rep Visits Also Begin This Week
Students, don't miss the opportunities to meet with representatives from colleges and universities right here at H-F during the school day! Beginning this week, reps will have scheduled time slots to give presentations to students in the College Room (located in the H-F Library) during specific class periods. To see the list of upcoming visits and to sign up for a visit, click here for the SchoolLinks website and log in with your student Google account. Please contact our Post-Secondary Counselors Mr. Coy (kevin.coy@hf233.org) or Mr. Kain (brad.kain@hf233.org) for all of the details; upcoming visits will also be posted weekly in the Events Calendar below.
PSAT Sign Up for Juniors Closes Saturday
Interested H-F juniors can now sign up for the Oct. 12 PSAT/NMSQT exam through our Assessment Department. This exam — also known as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test — provides an opportunity for high-scoring students to move on to the next round of the competition for national recognition. While not a mandatory exam, we strongly encourage all juniors to continue with their spring SAT preparation, using the online guide developed using Khan Academy (click here). Students will also continue to receive regular SAT prep in their regular coursework.
To sign up for the Oct. 12 PSAT:
- Log into your H-F Student Gmail account
- Follow this link...
- Complete the survey, then click "Submit."
Registration closes this Saturday, Sept. 10. Questions? Please email cbucci@hf233.org.
Special Note for Parents/guardians of of AP Students: Check your email and watch your mailbox at home for a special letter from the Assessment Office about registering for 2022-23 AP exams!
Online Services Fair: Sept. 21
The Special Education Department invites you to the free online Midwest Transition Institute Services & Technology Fair, set for 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 21. The fair will feature services and technologies important for adult life. Exhibitors will be grouped into 30-min. time slots representing related topics, including sensory supports, transition & vocational services and deaf-blindness agencies. The schedule of vendors will be sent to registered participants soon.
Above: Last Thursday was Back-to-School Night at H-F, when parents & guardians were introduced to teachers — plus counselors and staff as shown here — and saw their students' classrooms first-hand. This was the first in-person Back-to-School Night here since 2019, which bolstered the attendance, as staff and families were happy to interact again at school.
Below: Friday, Sept. 2, was the second Institute Day of the school year. Teachers and staff enjoyed a day of learning, focusing on deepening their understanding of the Profile of a Viking competencies, preparing for equity-centered conversations and engaging in department-specific collaborations.
Class of 2012 Reunion
Congratulations and thank you to Alumni Director Ann Cherry and the volunteer 2012 Class Reunion Coordinators — Eric Hewlett & Kaiya Harris-Brown — for their hard work in organizing the Class of 2012's 10-Year Reunion, which included a campus tour during the busy Labor Day holiday weekend! This class graduated right before the Fieldhouse renovation and VTV Studio makeover, so there was much for them to see. Next up: We will welcome back the Class of 1982 the weekend of Sept. 17 and the Class of 2002 on Homecoming weekend.
