SCPS ANNOUNCES FIRST NON-TRADITIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL DAY
District Declares First Snow Day Will Be a SnoGo Day
With the state’s approval of Shelby County’s Non-Traditional Instruction plan, the district is ready to put it into action. Shelby County’s Non-Traditional Instruction plan (also known as SnoGo) is a school day where students do not physically go to their school buildings, but learning continues. The District has announced that the first time school is “cancelled” because of snow, it will institute the SnoGo Plan.
According to Superintendent Neihof, the decision was made early to give everyone as much notice as possible. “We all have to make adjustments to make this successful. Having the certainty that we will use SnoGo on the first snow event this year means our students, teachers, and parents can prepare.”
The district has prepared several resources to help with the preparation. Please visit their website at www.shelby.kyschools.us to learn more.
FAQs about SnoGo
Why use Non-Traditional Instructional (SnoGo) days?
According to Chief Academic Officer, Susan Dugle, the continuity of learning is the primary reason. “Our goal is to foster a mindset of continual learning. Whether at home or at school, learning can and should be fun and lifelong.”
Director of Pupil Personnel, Mike Clark, also explains, “For every SnoGo Day we use, the Board will NOT have to add that day onto the end of the calendar in the summer.”
How will SnoGo work?
Students will not come to their school buildings, however, completing the assignments and tasks will allow them to be counted as “present” for the day.
How do I find out what my child should be doing on an NTI day?
Secondary students may log into Schoology to see assignments. They may also be given assignments in class.
Elementary students will have a menu of activities from which to choose. This menu is provided by each school and should be available at their school’s website. Some students may also choose to log in to Schoology to see options.
What are teacher and administrators doing on NTI days?
A SnoGo day is a work day for our teachers and principals. As weather permits, teachers and principals will be in their schools for the work day. Every teacher will also be easily accessible to parents and students via telephone and technology.
Will every snow day be treated as a SnoGo Day?
No - every snow day will not be a SnoGo day.
“The decision will be situational,” says Superintendent Neihof. “We will do our very best to communicate the decision as early and quickly as possible.”
How will I know whether or not SnoGo is being enacted?
We will use the usual methods we have used in the past to announce SnoGo days. Television, radio, e-mail, text messages, Twitter, Facebook, District/School websites, and One Call Now will all carry the message that “Buildings will be closed, but we will be enacting a SnoGo day.”
What happens to the kids who don’t have internet service at home?
While some assignments will be pushed out through our Learning Management System (Schoology,) many assignments will NOT require any internet connectivity to complete.
How will students submit their work* on NTI days?
If a student is able, he/she may submit his/her work online through Schoology.
If a student is unable to submit online, evidence should be turned in to the teacher.
* Many assignments will not require internet connectivity to complete or submit.
How long will students have to complete the work?
Students will be held accountable for all assignments and tasks assigned on a SnoGo day. The timeline for submitting work will be the same as the guidelines set by each school on a normal school day.
How long should it take for my child to complete the SnoGo assignments?
Each student will work at his/her own pace, so the time required to complete the work will vary depending on the child; however, students are not expected to do school work for the entire day.
What if I choose to let my child play in the snow all day?
Have fun! The work assigned on a SnoGo day does not have to be completed during “traditional” school hours, although some of the assignments can actually be completed while students are playing outside.
The goal of NTI is to allow learning to continue when students are not in the school building. As we prepare students for life beyond their academic career, we are trying to instill a mindset of lifelong learners. This means that learning can and should happen all the time.
If a student does not do the work assigned on a SnoGo day, he/she will be counted as absent for the day and/or will be required to remediate the content.
