St Cecilia's Catholic Primary School - Easter 2018

Almost Easter

The end of my second term at St Cecilia's, can't believe how time passed by so quickly. Easter has come very early this year, we could all do with a few more weeks before the break! After Easter we have the lovely long summer term and I am sure that we are all looking forward to the lighter days and warmer weather, although I hear there might be a little last snow for us this weekend.

It has been very special to be in school during Holy Week, seeing St Martin's Class perform Stations of the Cross today and watching the other classes walk the stations through the school, visiting each class in turn. Last week Father Kevin celebrated Mass for us and along with a Service of Reconciliation with Father Rob a little earlier the children have been well prepared during Lent to truly enjoy this Easter.

A reminder that school closes at 1200 tomorrow.

On behalf of the Governing Body and the staff, may I wish you all a very Happy and Blessed Easter, we look forward to seeing you all back after some lovely family time, on Monday 16 April.

Cloud computing with Google Champions

Our Google Chromebooks have been making their way our in to classes in recent days. Sponsored by Google and the London Grid for Learning, we have managed to secure the Chroembooks for around half their usual price, it's all part of the Google Cloud Champions project for London. These machines will eventually replace the computers that can be found in the library. They enable us to learn in different ways, bringing different aspects to teamwork through a variety of applications.

Charter of Values

As we come to the end of Term 2 it's a good time to visit our Charter of Values with the children, to consider how they have shown our values this term. For many of us, with our Lenten promises, this is a little easier. In our assembly at the end of this week the children will be reflecting on the Values, their strengths and weaknesses. We hope that you have seen your own child grow in the Values so far this academic year.

Class Dojo and Pupil (Student) Accounts

Are you enjoying Class Dojo? We really hope so, it's causing quite a buzz around the school.

It takes a while to settle down and for everyone to get used to the system, ourselves included! We have noticed one difference between the full rollout and the pilot, with the full rollout parents have received student account emails and have set them up. Whilst this is great news we hadn't anticipated this aspect of the implementation.

We will eventually use the student accounts to enable your child to send home examples of learning for you to celebrate. Please do not use this part of the app to encourage your child to message the teacher, send photos or other items. We have to pace ourselves and we would rather that student story recorded learning activities, at home and in school. We will start to use student story as we progress towards the summer, we will have assemblies where we discuss with the children the dos and don't of social sharing.

It is lovely to see you online, if you haven't joined yet look out for that letter in your child's bag. They have all been distributed. We will catch up with non subscribers after the Easter holiday - just in case you missed the letter.

PTA

Very pleased to welcome both Paula Nassan and Siobhan Leonard to the shared position of Chair of the PTA. We are very fortunate to have both these parents come forward to take up the challenge. Thanks to all those parents who came to the PTA meeting, we realise how tough it can be during the evening with young families, we really appreciate your thoughtfulness and commitment to the school.

More news about the PTA Movie Morning (Sat 28 April at 10am) and the Summer Fair (Sat 7 July) when we return to school after Easter.

Importance of Times Tables & Using Mathletics

Times tables have always been an important part of learning in Maths and a few years ago it became a national curriculum expectation that all children would know all the tables up to 10X10 by the end of Year 4. From 2020 the Government will be introducing a new national assessment for year 4 pupils just focussed on multiplication tables. I've attached a link below for some times table sites for a little fun while learning over the Easter holiday.

For those children with accounts, please don't forget to login to Mathletics! Have you checked your child's progress on it lately?

Year 5 Stations of the Cross

Many thanks to St Martin's Class for performing the Stations of the Cross for us today. A beautiful and yet solemn performance for both their parents and their peers today, beautiful song and movements, thoughtful and respectful - well done!

Year One Easter Bonnet Parade

In the KS1 final assembly today we celebrated another of St Cecilia's special traditions, the Easter Bonnet Parade. Many thanks to all our Year One parents who have supported their child in making such wonderful hats. We had a wide variety of hats today and could clearly see the time and effort that you had all put in to supporting this special activity at home - we hope that you had fun, I know that we have today. Congratulations to the winners of our competition, they are pictured above, but all the hats were tremendous, well done everyone!

Easter Raffle - Catholic Children's Society

Many thanks for all your support for our Easter Raffle, the draw will take place tomorrow. All the proceeds will go to our Lenten charity, the Catholic Children's Society. Fingers crossed!

The Charity Sale and raffle which took place last week has raised a total of £206.80. The prizes were won by Mrs Martin and Mrs Buchanan, Eden and Holly in Y1, Charlie, Kajish, Hannah and Maisie in Y2 and Stacey in Y5 with some of the children winning twice. Thank you to everyone who supported this event.

The Easter Egg raffle money and the Lenten boxes will be counted and we will give you an overall total when we return to school. St Cecilia’s has a proud history of raising money for various charities and it could not be done without the support of everyone.

Act One After School Club

I was proud to attend a wonderful performance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Monday. In sitting with the audience and I was amazed by the teamwork and confidence that was clearly on display. Well done to all those who took part in the play last night - it was such an enjoyable performance - a tremendous amount achieved in such a short space of time. The club are pictured above with Aaron Stephens from Act One.
