School Safety
As a school, it is our responsibility to partner with parents and the community to make sure that the needs of every student are being met everyday. In order to do that, we need to put policies in place that keep our students safe. The purpose of this newsletter is to inform you of the changes being made at Colin Powell Academy in order to keep your children safe so that they can focus on their education. We thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Student Drop Off/Pick Up
Effective Immediately - Please drive to the end of the drop off zone when you drop off or pick up your students. Stopping at the mouth of the driveway causes a backlog of traffic. Also, please avoid double parking and/or parking in handicap designated spots, we need to reserve those spaces for individuals who have a handicap placard.
TK & Kindergarten Drop Off/Pick Up
Effective Monday, October 1st, TK & Kindergarten students will not be dropped off or picked up at the gate by the Parent Center. TK/Kinder students will be dropped off and picked up at the East kinder gate, which is located at the far end of our kinder area. There will be signs posted to direct you and your TK/Kindergarten teacher will remind you about the change.
Early Pick Up
Effective Monday, October 1st, the deadline for early pick-up will be 2:45. After 2:45, teachers are closing out instruction and preparing students for the next school day. Limiting classroom interruptions will benefit both the students and teachers. We will not process early sign outs past 2:45, parents/guardians will need to wait until the end of the school day.
Visitors on Campus
Effective Immediately - When visiting campus during school hours, you will be asked to show identification, sign in, specify your destination and receive a name badge. You will not be allowed on campus or be allowed to check out a student without ID. We enjoy having our parents on campus, but after the start of school & during the day, we need a clear campus. Our students need to focus in class & stay on task, when adults loiter on campus it can be a distraction.
Closed Campus During Lunch
Effective Monday, October 1st, the campus of Colin Powell will be closed from 12:00-1:00. Administration will be supervising lunch and we have limited office staff available during that time. Please try to arrange appointments outside of this time frame, as all gates will be closed and no visitors will be admitted onto campus during that time.
Contact & Emergency Information
In case of an emergency, we need to be able to reach you or an emergency contact. If you have not already done so, please use ParentVue to update parent/guardian contact information & your student's emergency contacts.
Enrolling & Withdrawing a Student
If you are enrolling or withdrawing a student, please note the following:
- The parent/guardian enrolling or withdrawing must be on the birth certificate & enrollment paperwork.
- If there is a custodial agreement on file, the parent/guardian enrolling or withdrawing must have education rights.
- The parent/guardian enrolling or withdrawing must show proper identification, we will make a copy of the identification.
Snacks at School
Effective Immediately - Parents/guardians are not permitted to send refreshments to school for distribution to the students during the school day unless it is part of an organized classroom activity. No unsupervised pizza parties, cupcakes, etc… in the lunch area, and no flowers, balloons, or food will be delivered to students during school. We support authorized school parties hosted by the classroom teacher and/or room parents. Please do not ask us to make exceptions.
