Words from the Woods

November 2020

Giving Thanks

Even when we're responding to many challenges, there's so much to appreciate.

I'm feeling grateful for

  • the strong network of relationships between families and school, students and teachers, that keeps Woods Charter School going even in inclement circumstances.
  • the learning culture that encourages active participatory education for everyone
  • the curiosity, enthusiasm, and willingness of community members to figure out ways to get together, try new things, and have fun
  • the hope for the future embodied in our thoughtful, caring, young people

Thank you, everyone!

No Mid-term Exams this Year

Because of the calendar and the impact of remote learning, Woods will not hold mid-term exams this December. The days previously planned for exam days will revert to days of regular (remote) instruction.

Teachers may assign an assessment, reflection, or other project in lieu of an exam at their discretion. Each teacher will inform their classes about the expectations.

What's Next?

The School Board will re-assess the COVID-19 situation and consider whether to move from Plan C (remote learning) to an in-school or hybrid model after Winter Break in their November 19 meeting.

Please share your thoughts by participating in the 6-12 Parent Survey or the 6-12 Student Survey by Nov. 11.

Opportunities for Students

Many programs and organizations share student opportunities with us, and we pass them along to students. It's always good to be aware of the possibilities!

Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics is a no-cost, state-funded program for academically talented North Carolina students who aspire to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Applications for this summer opportunity are open now.

Into the Woods Logo Design Challenge We need a logo for our upcoming socially-distanced Into the Woods 5K! All students are invited to submit a design. The winner will be used on this year's December 5 race tshirts!

ArtSpective Challenge for Chatham County teens invites submissions related to mental health, COVID-19, remote learning, or social isolation. See below for more details.

The Jackie Robinson Foundation Scholarship program addresses the financial needs of college students and promotes the values and character traits embodied in the heroic life of the Foundation’s namesake, encouraging Scholars to positively impact the lives of others. Learn more online.

Staying in Touch

This newsletter is published during the first week of each month to provide information relevant to families of high school students. For grade-level communications, or topics that come up mid-month, I will email parent groups as needed.

You will also want to watch for the Woods News from the Front Office, and Athletics updates from Ms. Floyd.
