News & Notes
Good afternoon, Herrin High School Families:
I hope this message finds you well. We are about to wrap up the first semester, and I hope that everyone is making plans to spend time with family and friends during the holiday season. I am excited that we have been able to have the first half of the school year with all of the students in person at school. I am very proud of how the students, teachers, and parents have contributed to the efforts to keep the schools going during this semester.
We have started the winter sports season. Boys and girls basketball along with bowling and wrestling are in full swing. Also the scholar bowl, math, dance, and flag teams will be having their competitions as well. I hope that you will be able to come out and support all of our students as they represent Herrin High School in the various events. We are extremely proud of our students.
I want to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy holiday season. Enjoy the break. I look forward to January as we begin a new semester and new year.
Mr. Jeff Johnson, Principal
Herrin High School

HHS Semester Exam Policy
Every course (with the exception of courses such as CVE work release, Freshman Academy, Study Skills, and those approved by the principal) will conclude with a written final examination in which the student’s mastery of the course objectives will be assessed. An alternate formal method of evaluation may be used in place of a written examination if it has been approved by the department chairperson and principal. Other forms of evaluation may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Creative products (written, constructed, or performed) that demonstrate appropriate evidence of course mastery.
Oral exams that demonstrate course mastery.
Participation in the AP Exam, conducted by the College Board.
All students are required to take semester examinations at the end of the first semester. Any student meeting all of the conditions listed below will be exempt from the second semester examination in a course:
Academic: Earned a C or higher,
Attendance: Accrued three or fewer tardies and recorded no unexcused absences, and
Behavior: Served no ACR or suspension from any class.
For the spring semester, a student who has earned the right to be excused from the semester exam may choose to take it to raise their grade, never lower it. All students should plan to take exams until notified by each of their teachers.
No exam may be taken in advance of the regularly scheduled time. The principal must approve the postponing of an exam. No pre-planned absences will be approved during semester exams. Unexcused absences during an exam will result in a “0” on the exam. If an exam is missed due to an excused absence, the exam will be taken within two days of the return to class unless excused by a physician.
