Finding Good Fit Books!
I look at a book
Purpose-Why do I want to read it?
Interest-Does it interest me?
Comprehend-Do I understand what I am reading?
Know-Do I know most of the words?
Students in Grades 3 and 4 are given a computerized Scholastic Reading Count quiz three times throughout the school year. It tests each student's reading level and once the test is completed it will provide each student with their lexile score. That number is used to get their Lexile range which is determined by going 100 below their score and 50 above their score. Students then get onto Destiny ,our OPAC system, to search for books. So when students are searching for books they can look at the measure of that book to see if it is in their Lexile range. Students can do that through 2 ways:
*opening up the inside cover of a book to see the book's lexile measure by looking at a white label that contains that information
*get on Destiny, our OPAC system, and log in as themselves and search for books they like in their range. Click here for a link to a graphic that explains how to search in Destiny.
Feel free to also visit lexile.com to learn more information about what a lexile is. In addition the website also has features that allow you to type in books to search their lexile measure and students can even put in their range and reading interest and it will create a list of books that would be good fits to read.
