The balanced school day schedule has been in place for almost a year and a half at
both Woodlawn Early Years School and here at Southwood School. A great deal of
research and thought has gone into the decision of whether or not to adopt this
schedule. As we reflect on the past fifteen months, we have observed a number of
significant positives that have improved student learning and safety. There are a
number of other schools in Hanover School Division that are considering this schedule
for the upcoming school year.
The balanced school day schedule was initially a two year pilot project. We are now at
the point where we would want to decide if this schedule should continue moving
forward. Based on the surveys we conducted last May involving student, teacher, and
parents, we are inclined to continue. The Hanover School Division board of trustees
has requested some feedback from the two current schools using this timetable. We
are once again requesting your feedback. Over the next few weeks, you will receive an
invitation to participate in a survey based on the balanced day format.
Once again we appreciate your feedback and look forward to hearing from you.
Christmas Holidays Kindness Bingo
Students will be coming home during the holidays with a Kindness Bingo sheet that we would like them to participate in. Some of the activities will include: write a kind note and leave it for someone to find, hold the door open for someone, read a story with someone in your family, plus more! Once the bingo sheet activities have been completed, please sign your name and have your child return it to school after the Christmas holidays and they will receive a house point for participating. We know it will be a fun and rewarding experience for your child and we thank you for your support.

Messages from the Office...
Students need to be dressed and ready to play outside! The morning and afternoon activity breaks are 25 minutes each. The actual time that the children are really outside depends on how quickly they are able to bundle up! They look forward to this time of socializing and playing in this wonderful fresh snow. Good boots, mittens and a hat - added to ski pants and parka will make all the difference between a child enjoying the outdoors or tolerating it.
The following guideline will be used for deciding when indoor recess should occur:
- -30 degrees Celsius (with wind chill) - indoors for all recess
- -25 to - 30 degrees Celsius (with a wind chill) partial recess indoors
In the case of multiple indoor recesses due to cold weather, teachers may choose to take their class outside for a 5 - 10 minute break if needed. At these times, the class will be very closely supervised.
