Year 5 Newsletter
Term 1 - Friday 4th November 2016
Welcome to the Year 5 Newsletter
Welcome to the year 5 newsletter! All the teachers and children have been very busy preparing for our camp next week!
Unit of Inquiry
We are continuing to inquire into our second unit of the year: How The World Works.
How the World Works
Central Idea: Energy may be converted from one form to another and stored in various ways to enhance human progress.
Lines of inquiry
• Form - Different forms of energy sources (renewable and non-renewable)
• Change - How energy is used (transformation)
• Perspective - Sustainable energy practices (progress)
The children have finished reading the book "The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind". They reflected on how William, a young boy living in Malawi, Africa was able to generate electricity for his village that had access to none. They discussed the impact this had on the people living there and how it improved their lives through being able to access water (via an electric pump) and irrigate their fields and grow the food they all desperately needed.
We have also been continuing our exploration of electrical circuits and the different forms and sources of energy. Mr Tibble has begun 'Makey Makey' lessons with Y5 classes. The children have also been looking into how energy is transferred and the different forms of energy that are used during these processes.
In addition, Mr Luck has started on his lessons where the children will be creating and evaluating their own Rube Goldberg machines.
Zero Carbon Building trip
The children need to wear regular uniform. They will need to bring snack and water with them. We will return to school for lunch.
5J and 5S have already been on their trips to the ZCB and thoroughly enjoyed learning about renewable energy sources and how they can be used to help protect our environment.
