Lucille M. Nixon School

from the principal

February 10, 2021

Dear Nixon Families,

In recent weeks, as I have watched the reduction in local Covid-19 cases and the increasing access to vaccinations, my bucket of hope for the eventual end of this pandemic has been refilling. PAUSD is responding with efforts to bring more students from interested families back to school campuses in targeted classes and at the secondary levels. At the elementary level, we have been able to provide on-site schooling for nearly all of the students whose families would like this in our hybrid models. You may have read in the Superintendent’s update last Friday that a few elementary classes have been identified to try a five day per week return to school. These classes have 17 or fewer students in their combined A and B cohorts. Student desks will need to be closer than 6 feet to make this possible. At this time at Nixon, we do not have any hybrid classes at any grade level which have 17 or fewer students. As we all know very well by this time, the situation keeps evolving and the guidelines will likely shift to match.

21 Day Racial Equity Habit-Building Challenge

PAUSD has invited all staff and families as well as the community at large to join together in an effort to develop a deeper understanding of how inequity and racism affect our lives and community. This opportunity is marvelously well organized and very easy to fit into our very busy lives. I was worried when I first signed up that I wouldn’t be able to keep up, but as I looked at the website and saw how much choice it offers, I realized that I can totally do this. No one in this nation has imposed a mandate on us to examine issues of racism in our organizations and communities. Nevertheless, it is happening because so many of us have decided that we genuinely want to think and to learn, to speak and to listen.

I am very grateful to Assistant Superintendent Lana Conaway and her team for putting this incredible set of resources together for all of us. There are very impactful and brief videos of 3-5 minutes in length. There are audio selections that can be listened to while exercising or driving. There are also text articles of varying lengths. There are tips for talking with children about race. You can select something that fits your interest and time availability. Please click on this link to the 21 Day Equity Challenge website and take a look. All of the resources are available to you whether or not you decide to sign up as an official participant in the Challenge. The moderated online discussion is available to those who sign up as participants. One more suggestion: The conversation from last Thursday evening between acclaimed author (How to Raise an Adult and Real American: A Memoir), former Stanford Dean, and PAUSD parent Julie Lythcott-Haims and her mother is quite moving and very relevant to our community. I encourage you to listen and watch here if you can make the time.

Happy Valentines Day! The world can use some extra love these days!

Take care,

Mary Pat
