Dr. Gestson Discusses New Salary Schedules September 2022

PXU's New Minimum Wage and Starting Teacher Salaries

On Thursday, September 1, the PXU Governing Board approved new compensation packages that increased our minimum wage for ESPs to $16 an hour and our starting teacher salary to $52,200. This pay increase will be retroactive as of July 1, 2022. We encourage staff to log into Employee Access as soon as possible to accept your new compensation package. Freshman House 2022-2023

This year, we are so excited with how successful our Freshman Houses are and how our first year students are adjusting well to our campuses with the support they have through their Freshman House. Here is a video about Freshman House at PXU:

Franklin Community Fair

On September 17, Franklin will be hosting a community fair from 8am to 12pm. There will be food, prizes, hair cuts, music, as well as health offerings such as dental checks, blood pressure checks, mammograms, and COVID-19 vaccines. The new Bivalent COVID booster will be among the COVID vaccines offered! We hope to see you there.

The PXU Student Safety Committee will hold their first meeting on Saturday, September 17, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in the Governing Board Room located in the Lower Level of the Center for Educational Excellence (4502 N. Central Ave). This meeting is open to the public.

PXU Awarded Empowered District Seal

PXU earned the EVERFI’s Empowered seal, which was awarded to just 10% of school districts across North America in 2022! The EVERFI Empowered Seal is a designation awarded to K-12 school districts that have demonstrated an exemplary commitment to whole-child education through the use of EVERFI’s comprehensive, evidence-informed digital programs.

CEE Celebrates Renovated First and Lower Levels

Last Thursday before the Governing Board Meeting, CEE had a ribbon cutting to celebrate the progress made on the building. This was also the first Board Meeting in the newly renovated Governing Board Room. We are looking forward to another ribbon cutting when the building is complete.

Chandler Hovik: Cardinals High School Coach of the Week

Central's Football Coach, Chandler Hovik (pictured above on the left), was awarded High School Coach of the Week yesterday by the Arizona Cardinals for his outstanding coaching performance. He was presented with a certificate and $2000 for Central's Football program.

Metro Tech Enterprise Program Good News

The ESS Enterprise program (pictured above) had a successful opening of their student-run business, MT KNIGHTS. During the lunch hour, you will find the business bustling with both students and staff eager to try some of their new menu items.


Next time you are at Metro Tech, stop by and try one of delicious fresh baked pizzas, submarine sandwiches, or burgers made on their new grill.

Camelback beats Flagstaff in NAU's Walkup Skydome

Maryvale High School: National Education Equity Lab Awardee

PXU is proud to announce that Maryvale High School was selected as one of the 2022 National Education Equity Lab School of Excellence awardees. This is a significant honor that is given to their highest performing schools in the nation. They were honored at an awards ceremony on August 30th. They will be receiving a banner to display their accomplishment.


We are so proud of you, Maryvale! Way to go!

Cesar Chavez Hosts Successful Open House

Cesar Chavez hosted a successful Open House August 31 with over 400 families showing up to meet the Champion family. Clubs and community partners were invited to showcase what they are all about. Families were treated to dinner and performances from their band, theater and cheer teams. Great job, Champions!

PXU Visual & Performing Arts to Host Another PXU Dance Festival

PXU's Visual and Performing Arts department will be having another PXU Dance Festival at Camelback High School on September 19th. The PXU Dance festival is a gathering of dancers from across the PXU district to participate in a day of dance. Most schools are bringing their advanced/company levels of dance. Students have been in class for 3-4 years with training in ballet, jazz, and modern/contemporary.

Bostrom and Linda Abril Students Attend Arizona Black Rodeo

A group of Bostrom and Linda Abril students and staff (some pictured above) attended the Arizona Black Rodeo last week. The Arizona Black Rodeo is one of the largest and most popular African-American cultural and educational events in Arizona. The mission of Arizona Black Rodeo Association is to celebrate African-American history and culture, and to create memories.

Maryvale Color Guard Presents Colors at Cartwright District's 9/11 Never Forget Breakfast

This week, our Maryvale color guard team (pictured above) was invited to present the Colors at Cartwright District's annual 9/11 Never Forget Breakfast hosted by Dr. Aguilar-Lawlor to honor first responders and commemorate 9/11. Maryvale JROTC continues to look for opportunities to support our partners and build relationships in our community. After the color presentation, the students had a chance to thank local first responders, and talk to some of their Jr. High School teachers and administrators from Cartwright District. We are proud of them for representing Phoenix Union in a positive way and supporting our partner district!

Cesar Chavez Culinary Arts Students Get Creative

Students in Cesar Chavez's Culinary Arts 3-4 showed off their creative and artistic skills. The students learned about fruit, completing a fruit pizza lab. The pizza had a sugar cookie crust, cream cheese frosting, and a variety of colorful fruits decorating their pizzas.


They have also been studying dairy products and meats. The lab for this unit was a charcuterie board; students used a variety of meats, cheeses, fruits, nuts, olives, crackers, jam and bread to decorate their boards.


The food looks delicious, Chavez Culinary! Keep up the good work!

This year, PXU has a handful of students that have been selected as College Board National Recognition Program Awardees. Students earn this recognition because of their academic achievements in school and outstanding performance on the PSAT/NMSQT®, PSAT™ 10, and/or AP® Exams.

ElevateEdAZ

ElevateEdAZ is an initiative of the Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation focused on aligning classes and curriculum with workforce needs, creating opportunities for students to apply academics through work-based learning, and increasing student exposure to career pathways. ElevateEdAZ is designed as a model for Arizona schools to better integrate high wage, high demand, high skill career pathways into the K-12 education system. With College and Career Coaches already embedded at the Academies at South Mountain, Metro Tech High School, and Phoenix Coding Academy, ElevateEdAZ looks forward to providing many impactful experiences to students and educators this coming school year.
