Summer Work
I hope you are all enjoying this beautiful summer on the lakeshore and all it has to offer! We are so very lucky to be here in Two Rivers where we have access to Point Beach State Park, Neshotah Beach and the beauty of our downtown! With that being said, I am very excited to be serving the Koenig Community again for the 2019-2020 school year. This will be my 21st year here at Koenig Elementary, a 17 year award winner for a School of Recognition.
Our work this summer continued to center around thoughtful and purposeful plan of implementation for the “Kids At Hope” Framework. Adults (Treasure Hunters) who believe in ALL children, who care enough about them to invest emotionally and who are committed to helping them to navigate their futures. The Two Rivers School District is excited about the following vision for the years to come, “All children are capable of success-NO EXCEPTIONS!” Our goal will be to redefine our practices to have a better understanding of ways in which every child is afforded the belief, guidance and encouragement that creates a sense of hope and optimism, supported by a course of action needed to experience success. We will time travel into the future!
That work led us to learning about many aspects of our overall school culture including the framework of Positive Behavioral Systems (PBIS). You will be receiving information on what this will look like during our school year and how it will be rolled out throughout our building. Positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) is a way for schools to encourage good behavior. With PBIS, schools teach kids about behavior, just as they would teach about other subjects like reading or math.
In addition, the 19-20 school year will again bring opportunities to practice yoga and mindfulness. These practices help to cultivate positive states of mind like gratitude, kindness, joy & compassion as well as supporting positive communication and interaction amongst each other. All students have a responsibility to themselves to make smart choices and to be guided through the problem solving process. Your child will work within the classroom and within All School Character Assemblies to identify characteristics of a good citizen and ways in which we can demonstrate those qualities on a day to day basis.
Our district elementary staff continued to work diligently to refine what literacy/math practices look and sound like in the classroom while providing individualized instruction based on your student’s needs. They have enhanced the curriculum to model best practices and to provide a consistent delivery of content. Part of that process was looking at grade level standards, research based interventions and what assessments help to determine mastery of those standards. The work is centered around professional learning communities where we are asked to answer the following questions:
- What specifically do we expect all students to learn?
- How will we know when each student has learned it?
- How will we respond when students are having difficulty learning?
- How will we respond when students demonstrate that they have learned?
Have wonderful conclusion to your summer while we look forward to a successful 2019-2020 school year beginning on September 3rd! As always, feel free to contact me at dana.mclinn@trschools.k12.wi.us, with any questions or concerns!
