Newsletter Week 8, Term 1
St Michael's Catholic School Rotorua, Wednesday 23rd March
Tēnā koutou kātoa e te whānau,
This weeks newsletter comes to you from my dining room table as I'm isolating at home with Covid. Although still testing positive, I now feel like I have come through the worst of it. My symptoms were that of a head cold, runny nose, head ache and a sore throat, nothing too bad.
We have a few children and another staff member isolating after testing positive but I am confident that these cases have been household contacts and everyone currently isolating was at home before they became unwell.
We are continuing to maintain our strong hygiene procedures and we are grateful for the families that are able to keep their children at home if they are unwell.
We have been able to manage the school with some classrooms doubling up due to staff shortages in some areas. We are making sure to keep things as normal as possible for the children so they remain happy and safe and that learning continues for them. If your child is isolating, please contact their classroom teacher and a home learning pack will be delivered to your home.
We have three and a half weeks before the Easter break and I am hopeful that we can get there without too much disruption.
Colour Fun Run - you still have time to sign your child up and start fundraising. There are some really cool rewards to gain by registering your child. All children who raise money are eligible for the rewards. So far The Ark has raised the most money, over $3000! Great work Ark kids and whanau. The money raised will go towards developing a bike track for the children. If anyone in our community has experience with building bike tracks, we would love to hear from you.
Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with whanau who are unwell and having to self-isolate. We thank our wonderful community for continuing to support our school and whanau during this challenging time.
Stay safe and well everyone,
Ma te Atua koutou e manaaki,
Te tumuaki o te kura Hato Mikaere

Message from Fr Thomas
My Dear Parishioners and Friends,
As you know this Friday, the 25th March, on the solemnity of the ANNUNCIATION of
the LORD, Pope Francis will consecrate Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart
of Mary, during a service he will preside over in St Peter's Basilica.
Bishop Stephen Lowe, the Bishop of Auckland, and Secretary of the NZ Catholic
Bishops Conference, said visiting a Church next Friday would be a show of solidarity.
“All over Ukraine, people are having to flee their homes because of the war. Leaving
our homes here in Aotearoa New Zealand to go to our local Church to pray on this
special day would very much be showing solidarity to the people having to leave their
homes in Ukraine.
“Normally we would have a Mass or advertise a time for the Rosary but with the
current Covid-19 restrictions imposing a limit of 100, we are hoping people will visit
their local church throughout the day. The bishops too will also be heading to their
respective Cathedrals to pray the Rosary on Friday in support of Pope Francis.
“What is important is leaving your homes on Friday to visit your local Church, at a
time that suits you. We will be asking all Churches to be open from 7am to 7pm so as
many people as possible can visit at different times during the day, in keeping with
the Covid-19 restrictions.”
Bishop Lowe said Friday would be a day of prayer for everyone affected by the war:
“We will be praying for those who have been wounded or killed. We will be praying
for those who care for the wounded. We will be praying for those who have suddenly
become refugees and for those that care for them. And we will pray that the Russian
leadership and soldiers may have a change of heart.
“This is the Season of Lent, which is about the change, the conversion of the heart.
Christ calls us to love our enemies and to embrace each other as brothers and sisters.
And as we pray for Ukraine, we also remember those caught in other conflicts,
including Yemen, Syria, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Libya and elsewhere.”
So, both our Churches; St Mary’s and St Michael will be opened with the
Blessed Sacrament Exposed from 7.00am to 7.00pm. on Friday 25-03-
2022. Please come (if possible, with your family) and pray the Rosary.
There will be Two Holy Masses with Covid Restrictions:
1. St Mary’s at 9.00am (100),
2. St Michael at 6.00 pm (50).

School Colour Fun Run:
Thank you for everyone who has signed up and started fundraising. We have currently raised an AMAZING $7000! Thank you to the community, this is not possible without all your support. The Fun Run is set for the next Friday 01/04/22, we will reassess the number of children at school next week and make a decision to postpone the Run date or not. We will be in contact. Please remember your child will need a white T-shirt for the day.
Each family would have received a raffle booklet and list of items to bring each week. This has been a fundraiser that has been around for many years and has always been a success. If you do not sell all your tickets please return the unsold tickets to the office as other families might want extra booklets. Raffle draw will be done on the last day of term 1.
