SCCS TEACHING AND LEARNING SEGMENT

In the January Home Bulletin I shared a slice of what happens inside the walls of SCCS, describing what faculty do during our professional development time on Wednesday afternoons to keep improving our craft. In today’s slice, I would like to share an example from second grade that demonstrates how our faculty design learning experiences that nurture and engage students in a balanced approach to reading, writing, and communicating effectively. Our master teachers and paraprofessionals divide their English Language Arts class time into 20-30 minutes of decoding skill practice, 20-25 minutes of small group reading instruction, and 20-30 minutes of whole class instruction. Our teachers weave in grammar, spelling and a minimum of 30 minutes of writing instruction as well. It is pretty amazing to see how many different opportunities students are given to develop their reading, writing, and communicating abilities!

CONGRATULATIONS!

Congratulations to Mrs. Wieringa, who was selected as this month’s McTeacher of the Month! To recognize her efforts, she has received a plaque, $100 to use on her classroom, and free coffee for a year.

PENGUIN DAY IN 3RD GRADE

Our 3rd graders are being Order Discoverers as they study penguins, Antarctica, the phases of the moon, stars, and constellations!

Very appropriately, they celebrated Penguin Day last week, dressing up in black and white, penguin-themed learning activities, and even holding Penguin Olympics! They watched a video on Antarctica while pretending they were on the observation deck of a ship sailing along its coastline.

In science last week, 3rd graders modeled the phases of the moon with Oreos! Yum! They learned that the moon phases take one month-- which used to be pronounced more like "moonth" and are caused by the sun's light reflecting onto the moon in different ways.

They also went to the Oak Grove Prairie Woods Nature Center for a learning experience to study constellations in the star lab - a big inflatable dome students crawl into with the stars and constellations projected on the walls. Sunday Ford taught them how to find the Big Dipper in the North sky and then use that to find the North Star.

Plus some students were Servant Workers as they worked to remove the thick ice in places on our playground cement!

We are thankful for Mrs. Bootsma, Mrs. Korver, and Mrs. Wieringa, our 3rd grade teachers who designed each of these lessons and learning experiences so students can be Order Discoverers, Creation Enjoyers as they learn God's Story, love it and live it!
