Suffolk Sustainability 101
A quick guide to being sustainable in the residence halls!
What is sustainability?
Sustainability is about meeting the needs of today’s generations, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.
At Suffolk, we work together to encourage individual and collective decisions and actions that foster conservation. Sustainable practices promote environmental, financial, and social well-being.
HOW DOES COMPOSTING WORK AT SUFFOLK?
When in the dining halls and cafes, deposit paper
plates, napkins, and food scraps (i.e. cores, peels,
bones, leftovers) in the compost bins. The materials are transported to a facility 30 mi. from Boston, to become
fertilizer for gardening.
DO I NEED TO SORT AND CLEAN MY RECYCLABLES?
NO & NO!
- Suffolk’s single stream program allows for glass, metal, plastic, and paper to go in any recycling bin.
- No need to rinse recyclables - just empty out food/liquid.
- Liquid goes in a sink or water fountain.
- Food goes in a waste basket if a compost bin is not available.
- Empty pizza boxes and other cardboard boxes can be placed next to recycling bins.
WHAT DO WE RECYCLE AT SUFFOLK?
- Paper (office paper, colored paper, envelopes, magazines, books, coffee cups)
- Cardboard
- Glass bottles/jars
- Metal cans
- Plastic bottles/containers
- Printer cartridges*
- Rechargeable batteries*
- Cell phones*
- Compact fluorescent bulbs (Facilities)
