SLRI Update
Fall 2017
Message from the President
Welcome back to school!
I am writing this message to you during “Banned Books Week” and reflecting upon how passionate my students were during our discussions this week. They were very enthusiastic about “standing up for their right to read” and making sure they had the power to make their own decisions on book choice. This is one example of how librarians have great power and influence in schools, and yet several schools across Rhode Island are still cutting library positions.
Please consider attending our monthly meetings or becoming active in other ways to help our fellow librarians and those GSLIS students who are about to enter our field. We currently have a few board positions available; if you are interested in managing the Awards process, heading the Conference committee, or acting as the SLRI rep for the New England School Library Assocation, please email me at SLRI.Prez@gmail.com.
In addition to monthly meetings, we also offer professional development such as conferences and social events such as our “Watering Holes.”
We’d love to meet you! Please join us!

SLRI.Prez@gmail.comAnnual Membership Meeting on Oct. 13
Mark your calendars for Friday, Oct. 13! It's our lucky day, as we get to hold our annual membership meeting during pre-festival activities at the Lincoln School.
Your $20 ticket includes a boxed dinner at 5:00; Q&A session with Sarah Weeks, author of KRARI 2017 Save Me A Seat (as well as prior RICBA nominees Pie and So B. It); and the premier of the So B. It film at 6:00.
You'll also have the chance to meet participants in the next day's Rhode Island Festival of Children's Books and Authors and get books signed.
Show RIDE How We Instill Love of Reading
The Commissioner ended the newsletter with this invitation: "Join us on social media and share your ideas, your favorite books, and photos of your family reading, by tagging@RIDeptEd and using the hashtag, #RIReads."
Many SLRI members already post updates showing the great stuff they're doing with students. We all need to be out there sharing our passion and our unique position to connect kids with books. Setting up a Twitter account takes a matter of minutes. Follow @SchLibRI and we'll follow you back and repost your tweets.
