Weekly Update
Leading Lifelong Learners
Principal's Notes for the week of 2/18-2/22
It is hard to believe that we are almost through the month of February and the start of fourth quarter is only a few weeks away. We are looking at doing a MAP/EOC celebration on either March 25th or 26th, I will let you know for sure next week. We will being doing a similar format as we did last year with the large inflatables in the gym. We will be following this schedule on that day.
- MS will have their celebration from 8:00-11:30 (roughly)
- HS will have their celebration from 11:40-3:17 (roughly) (this will allow the Nichols students to enjoy the day).
We will be using the commons area and the gymnasium all day long for this activity. Meaning that the seniors will have to eat in the cafeteria on this day or outside.
Reminder that we have our faculty meeting next Wednesday, February 27, 2019 from 3:35-5:00 p.m. Mr. Denning will be doing a presentation/activity over instructional strategies and poverty. Over the course of the year I have put several poverty videos on your weekly updates. I hope that you have been watching them. As many of you know, our free and reduced lunch population sets around 50%. With that in mind our building has been identified as a "Targeted Building" by DESE on our most recent APR scores. With that being said, "Our targeted population is F/R lunch students. This group of students are simply not achieving like their peers." We have two options: 1) Make excuses as to why they aren't performing well OR 2) We come up with a plan to increase achievement for these students. Option one is full of excuses of things we can not control: home life, parents, income, etc etc etc. Option 2 is in our control. I don't exactly what this will look like yet, but I wanted to give you a heads up. We will will spend more time on this at the faculty meeting.
On March 4th, 2019 Mr. Clifford Atterberry will be here to talk to our Juniors and Seniors about the ACT WorkKeys assessment. We will call the students down around 2:40 or so to the cafeteria.
Parent/Teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, February 28, 2019 from 3:30-7:00 p.m. Please bring your Chromebooks to these meetings. After this weeks parent contact week, the parents should be well informed. Again, if you haven't let parents know about F's in your classes please contact them before the day ends. Also invite them to the parent conferences. We want these parents to come!!!
On February 28, 2019 starting at 2:45 a.m. the MS students will be in the gym for the Major Savers fundraiser kickoff. We will call them down when we are ready for them.
Please be sure to continue working on your curriculum it is due when you leave in May.
The link below take you to an article that speaks on what we as teachers can do to help support students from "Poverty".
