The Four Faces of Violence: Insights from Brain Research
For many years, the specific neural pathways and mechanisms underlying emotional behavior, including violence, remained obscure. But over the last several decades, state-of-the-art tools and techniques like brain imaging have shed new light on the neurobiological origins and consequences of violent behavior, including changes in brain structure and functioning characteristic of violent individuals. This presentation will examine the neurobiological “signature” of four subtypes of violence — hostile, antisocial, drug-related, and psychotic — and how this knowledge can change the way we think about this critical social problem.
