Summer Institute for the Gifted
University of California at Berkeley-Session II
Welcome SIG Parents and Guardians
We are excited for another SIG session here at the University of California at Berkeley. It was great to meet many of you, your families, and most importantly, the SIG students yesterday for registration day. The next three weeks at SIG will be a life-changing experience for all of our students and, twice a week, we will send you a newsletter to highlight some of the many activities, courses, and exploration that is happening here at the University of California at Berkeley.
The First Day is Upon Us
The first day was filled with excitement and wonder as the students met new friends and started their SIG courses. Students began to discuss topics related to Bioengineering, Chemistry, Fitness, Algebra, Brain and Dreaming, Philosophy, and much more. After classes, students went to the University of California at Berkeley bookstore, played various sports at one of the fields, played board games, or just relaxed on the quad with their new friends. During the evening, students had time to get to know their counselor groups with more getting to know you activities including banner making in preparation for our upcoming Mini-Olympics. Today is the first full day of academic classes, recreational activities, and residential activities. Students will continue to explore their classes, and if they have been given permission by you to change courses, students will have until dinner on Tuesday night to do so. This means that all class changes will be finalized for classes on Wednesday morning. Please keep in mind that we will do our best to adjust class schedules, but changes are based on class enrollment numbers and class offerings on site, We know that many of our students are adjusting to the schedule, time difference, the campus, and each other, but we know that your child will have the time of their life the next three weeks!

A Note to Commuter Parents:
We hope the first days of academic courses, including the drop off and pick off routine, are going smoothly. Remember 8:15-8:30 am is for drop off and 5:30-5:45 pm is pick up. At the end of the day, please allow the staff 5 to 7 minutes to escort the students from their respective rec hour choices to the drop off location and all students MUST sign in and sign out with Bobby and Mo. If a commuter student is leaving early and not participating in recreational hour, please inform the staff in the morning or call our office.

Senior Privileges-(15-17 year old SIG students)
If your child is in the Senior group (ages 15-17 only), on Wednesday we will implement our Senior Privileges. These privileges include an area on Telegraph where they can stroll with a buddy, eating with their friends, and walking to and from class with check in procedures. We are also planning a tour with the UC Berkeley Admissions Office for the final week and a few more surprises.
