Week of September 12- New Information
- Thanks for another great week as a Yellowjacket! Picture day is Tuesday! See flyer below to order fall pictures. All students and staff will take a picture for the yearbook, regardless of whether they will order or not.
- Tuesday night is Red Door Night! 10% of food sales will be given to Young Elementary. Visit Red Door in Tontitown (more information below).
- Parent/Family conferences will be September 26 and 27. Teachers will send sign-ups home this week.
- We got "quacked!" We pledged to sell 10 "ducks" for the duck race. Purchase a duck for Young or for your child's teacher so they have a chance to win a $1,000 grant for the classroom. Visit spsef.org/duckrace/ today! Due on Monday for the Sept 24th race.
- We try our best to only send communication home to parents in one newsletter per week. We understand that your time is valuable and receiving extra communication from school can be cumbersome. We are doing our best to share important information. We are going to shorten our newsletter by not repeating information for multiple weeks. We will add new information to the top of the newsletter and good reminders to the bottom.
MAP Testing
MAP testing occurs three times a year and is used to help teachers guide their instruction. We are currently in the fall testing window. Several grades have tested already and 2nd grade and 5th grades will test on September 21st and 22nd. We will continue to make up tests for students that have been absent this week and next week.

Calling all 2nd - 5th grade Chess Players
The Fall 2022 NWA Chess Tournament will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022. The tournament is scheduled for 8:30 am - 3:00 pm and each student will play 5 games. Please print the registration form or pick one up from outside Ms. Taunton's room (Room 505) or the office. Registration forms need to be returned to Ms. Taunton on or before September 26th.
Cheer Club- 2nd grade
Does your child have an interest in cheer? Ms. Peyton, our lunch IA, will be hosting an after school cheer club for 2nd graders. The club will meet on Wednesdays after school until 3:10. Students will perform at our October assembly. During the camp, students will learn 1 cheer, 1 chant, and 1 simple sideline to perform at the school wide assembly. We can only take up to 15 students on a first come first serve basis. Please complete the following application if your child is interested. If we have an overwhelming response, we will take the first 15 and then start another group in November.
The club will begin on Wednesday, September 28th and will conclude on Wednesday, October 26. Sign up here!
September is suicide awareness month
Since 2008, September has been a time to acknowledge those affected by suicide, raise awareness, and connect individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death for all Americans. 45,979 people were lost to suicide in 2020 (the last year for which we have current figures); 583 of those were in Arkansas. Of those, 41 were youths under 20!
Suicide is preventable! Youth who are contemplating suicide give warning signs of their distress. Parents, teachers, and friends are in important positions to pick up on these signs and get help. Most important is to never take these warning signs lightly or promise to keep them secret. When all adults and students in the school community are committed to making suicide prevention a priority, and are empowered to take the correct actions, we can help youth before they engage in behavior with irreversible consequences.
Suicide Warning Signs
Most suicidal youth demonstrate observable behaviors that signal their suicidal thinking. These include:
- Suicidal threats in the form of direct ("I am going to kill myself") and indirect ("I wish I could fall asleep and never wake up again") statements.
- Suicide notes and plans (including online postings).
- Prior suicidal behavior.
- Making final arrangements (e.g., making funeral arrangements, writing a will, giving away prized possessions).
- Preoccupation with death.
- Changes in behavior, appearance, thoughts and/or feelings.
- Extreme withdrawal from friends and family.
For Parents - What Can You Do to Help a Youth?
Parents should always take any reference to suicide or warning signs of suicide seriously. Never ignore these signs. If your child exhibits any of the signs parents should seek help from school or community mental health resources as soon as possible. If your child is an immediate risk, parents should take them immediately to an emergency room for evaluation.
We want to offer information about suicide prevention, the warning signs of suicide, and to decrease stigma surrounding mental health concerns, thereby encouraging help-seeking. At Bernice Young we take every warning sign seriously and follow our district's protocol on Reports of Threat of Self Harm. If you have questions, concerns, or are in need of other resources, please contact Mrs. Nelson or call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline at 988.
Mrs. Ashley Nelson is our school counselor! You can reach out to her online classroom by clicking the picture OR you can submit a request for your child to see the counselor here.

We LOVE our Yellowjacket Staff!
We like to treat our teachers and support staff and show them the LOVE you have for them. It is fun to have little gifts to share with the teachers throughout the year. If you would like to donate a small teacher door prize, please have your child bring it to the office with a note that says "door prize". This can be anything from a $5 Sonic/7Brew card to a pack of fun pens or a chocolate bar. We will have teacher professional development coming soon and would love some door prizes to hand out. Little things go a long way!
