Digital Citizenship - Etiquette for Google Classroom
What in the world is Netiquette?
Dictionary.com defines it as the rules of etiquette that apply when communicating over computer networks, especially the Internet.
It is important to recognize that online classrooms like Google Classroom is in fact a classroom, and certain behaviors are expected when you communicate with both your peers and your teachers. These guidelines for online behavior and interaction are known as netiquette.
How Can You be a Good Digital Citizen?
Don't Use All Caps
When you write in all capital letters, this looks (and maybe sounds) as if you are shouting. Be mindful of bolding, colors, and fonts as well. This can also be misunderstood by the person on the other end.
Use Proper English
An email/discussion post is not a text message. You need to use correct punctation, spelling, and grammar. You can always use the spell check feature. Avoid slang terms such as “wassup?” and texting abbreviations such as “u” instead of “you”
No Profanity, No Swearing, No Bad Words
Be cautious when using humor or sarcasm. Your message might be taken seriously or offensively. Remember that tone is conveyed through word choice, syntax, punctuation, letter case, sentence length, opening, closing, and other graphic indicators like emoticons and emoji. Never make fun of someone or use profanity.
Protect Yourself And Your Reputation.
Remember, nothing is ever totally erased and if something doesn't feel right then it probably isn't. Don't share personal information or passwords. Reread what you type and make sure it is in line with how you want to be perceived by your peers and teacher.
Protect Your Computer
- Be careful what you download. It may contain viruses or objectionable content.
- Only use reputable sites for research. Ask a teacher or your librarian if you aren't sure.
- Use security software and update as needed.
Don't Share Your Password
Remember that your password is the only thing protecting you from pranks or more serious harm.
• Don't share your password with anyone.
• Change your password if you think someone else might know it.
• Always log out when you are finished using the system.
