National Hispanic Heritage Month
Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.
The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.
The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period.

Nutrition Services News
Each student may eat one breakfast and one lunch per school day free of charge.
We encourage families to complete the Application for Educational Benefits. Qualifying families may then receive benefits such as reduced activity fees, help with education expenses and some discounts. Please note that students who receive Medicaid or Medicare benefits are automatically enrolled. Start the process by creating your account at www.schoolcafe.com/register.
Red Wing Public Schools has switched to SchoolCafé. All funds from a student's former PayPams account have been moved to the new system. Since breakfast and lunch will be served free of charge this year, funds in an account may be used to purchase ala carte items, including milk for those students who bring lunch from home.
If you have questions, email or call Jess Peña at japana@rwps.org or 651-385-4583.
Families can deposit money by online payment or send cash or check to the school their child attends. Checks should be written to ISD 256. Checks should also contain the student’s full name on the memo line. The check can be written for multiple students. If doing this, please note this on the check.

RWHS Food Pantry
We know that a full tummy means a brain that's ready to learn! Thanks to generous donations from our community, RWHS has a food pantry accessible to ALL students grades 8-12. Students can leave school with a very discreet bag of food or personal care items to take home to their family-for free. There are no restrictions on who can use this or how many times.
Contact the nurse, your counselor or a teacher to sign up.
You may also email nurse Vikki at vlleclaire@rwps.org.
- Darius W and Carlos O-A: Thank you for sharing with the class your truth in Native Literature when we were discussing word choices and language. I appreciate your participation and your voice! -Mrs. Kiefer
- Abby Schmaltz, Jed Heineman, and every other student helping new students find their classes: Thanks for being so generous with your time and stepping up to help new students! It's tough being new when you're in high school, especially when you haven't gotten used to the space. Keep looking after the newbies and keep helping them feel comfortable in their new environment! -Mrs. Kiefer
- Carli Waddell: Carli, Thank you so much for all your help in getting things ready for GSA this year! Also, excellent job on the yearbook cover! -Mrs. Hanson
- Fall athletes: Adjusting to back-to-school WHILE in-season for a sport is exhausting, so GREAT JOB! Keep up the great job you all do in representing our school and community with Winger Pride! -Mrs. Bray
We are continuing this year with weekly newsletter SHOUT-OUTS! Each weekly newsletter will provide any staff or student the opportunity to submit a shout-out to a staff or student of the RWHS community. Shout-outs will be printed in the next newsletter.
Consider using this opportunity to lift someone up, praise successes or hard work, thank someone, or just call attention to someone who makes RWHS a great place to be!
