Notes from the Eagle Ridge Academy Board of Directors
Dear Eagle Ridge Academy Community,
On behalf of the Eagle Ridge Academy Board of Directors, welcome to the 2021–2022 school year. We are so grateful that the school community can be back together in person for learning this year. The goal of Eagle Ridge Academy is to keep students safely in person for as much of the school year as possible. This goal has been the foundation of all decision making at the Board level this school year. The Eagle Ridge community is beautifully diverse and with that comes diversity in thought. This community has risen to the challenge with respect and grace and come together to ensure the best possible outcome for the children – a Classical Education taught in person. For that, we are grateful and proud to serve our community.
The Board of Directors has many new officers for the 2021–2022 school year. Please see below for a brief introduction to each of the officers. Board officers hold positions for one academic year.
Clare Murray – Chair (First grade teacher and parent of two School of Grammar Gryphons)
April Grabanski – Vice Chair (Fifth grade teacher and parent of two School of Rhetoric Gryphons)
David Croson – Treasurer (Parent of School of Logic and School of Rhetoric Gryphons)
Anne Bartow – Secretary (Second grade teacher and School of Grammar Gryphon parent)
The Board of Directors currently has two vacant positions. There is an open Teacher and Community Member position. The Community Member position must be filled by a person who has no familial relation to any Eagle Ridge Academy employee or student. Interested parties and those with questions are free to contact any Board officer.
We look forward to working with you to serve our students this school year!
Notes from Executive Director Jason Ulbrich
Welcome back to Eagle Ridge Academy for the 2021-2022 school year! I am so grateful to see all of our students and staff each day. Last year, we missed being able to teach in person and to enjoy the laughs from the children. Classical Education is best delivered in person and ERA is working diligently to keep our students safe and healthy so they can stay in school as long as possible. The education that our teachers are providing to your children is first class. I have observed many classes where the students are thoroughly engaged and enjoying both learning and the company of their peers.
It’s a fact that the start of the school year is ALWAYS chaotic. The parking lot during pick-up and drop-off times is especially so as we have an increased number of families transport their children at the start of the school year. If we all agree to follow some simple rules, it will run smoothly. The reason I know this is because we have been successful before!
- In the morning, the drop-off line is almost empty from 7:30 a.m. - 7:40 a.m. Please use this time. If you arrive to the drop-off line at 7:50 a.m., your child will be late.
- Drop your child off in the parking lot ONLY. Some families have dropped off on Bren Road and even in the private parking lot across the street.
- During afternoon pick-up, do not arrive before 2:50 p.m. When cars are onsite too early, the line backs up to Shady Oak Road. If this continues, we will place a barrier across the drop-off line until 2:50 p.m.
- Do NOT park in the private parking lot across the street. This is a dangerous section of the street to walk across, it is private property, and you are cutting in front of others who are waiting patiently.
- Be kind! Our staff and parent volunteers have smiling faces and are grateful to serve you. Please return the respect.
Lastly, the owners of the private parking lots across the street have said that they will enforce their Customer Parking Only policy by towing unauthorized vehicles. Please help us be a good neighbor.
Sincerely,
Jason Ulbrich

Community Updates: School of Grammar
School of Grammar Notes - Janelle Mellgren, Prinicpal
School of Grammar Families,
We did it! Our school year is up and running, which is no small feat on any of our parts. It has been very good to see all our students in person, as well as many of you. Our first few days are off to a great start, for which we are grateful. At the start of each school year, relationship building, consistency, and routine are always important in an elementary school.
As a classroom teacher for ten years, I always carefully scripted out my first several weeks of school to ensure I helped my students feel connected to me and one another, build a strong learning community, and practice how to "do school", so that our focus for the rest of the year could be on deepening relationships and learning amazing things.
After a year plus of transition, disruption, and upheaval, relationships, consistency, and routine are more important than ever. These things help students (and us!) recover from the past months. Make no mistake – recovery still needs to be done. One thing that aids in this recovery is a feeling of safety. As we continue to build relationships, consistency of expectation, and routines here at school, we also appreciate the consistency and routine you provide in your home and how those two things are great ways to support our youngest Gryphons.
Wishing you a very happy Labor Day,
Janelle Mellgren
Community Updates: Schools of Logic & Rhetoric
Schools of Logic & Rhetoric Notes - Erin Johnson, Principal
Schools of Logic & Rhetoric Families,
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year! We are so grateful to be back together in person this year, seeing and engaging our students in a traditional, Classical Education. I have had the opportunity to visit each classroom during this first week back and am excited by what I have seen. Students are already engaging with our rigorous coursework, jumping in to read The Iliad, making lollipops in chemistry for their first hands-on lab, and reciting math facts. There is joy on the faces of staff and students alike and I am grateful for the opportunity to have our students here.
We are excited for some changes in the Schools of Logic and Rhetoric, including a daily 29-minute study hall. This will also be a time for students to work with the counselors on Social-Emotional Learning and college and academic advising, in addition to connecting with their advisors weekly to do grade check-ins, work with teachers on a more individual level as needed, and work with other students. Please check in with your child regularly to see how things are going. Ask specific questions about classes to help them engage in conversation with you and remind them that there is always help available, either through you, as parents, or through the caring teachers and staff at school.
Please mark your calendar for next Thursday, September 9, to attend Curriculum Night for the Schools of Logic and Rhetoric, 5:00-7:00 p.m. This is a time for you to walk your child’s schedule and interact with the teacher to hear more about what they are learning daily.
We also have a variety of athletics and activities available this year. Talk to your child about participating in our extracurricular activities, including theater, Math Team, Nerd Coalition, Music Listening Club, Yearbook, and more. We want all students to have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities throughout their time at Eagle Ridge Academy. Participation in extracurriculars provides students with many benefits, including: improved academic performance, higher self-esteem, social opportunities, essential life skills, and information for resumes and college applications. It also helps students figure out how to budget their time appropriately.
We place a high level of academic challenge on our students, but we also want to make sure we show them support to be a well-rounded individual. We are grateful you have chosen Eagle Ridge Academy to educate your students. Go Gryphons!
Sincerely,
Erin Johnson

Fresh Kicks - Kris Babler, Activities Director
Dear Families,
Fall and the return to school is a special time of year. Some of my fondest memories are going back to school and rocking new sneakers that first week back – before the effects of outdoor recess and constant growth kicked back in.
The Academy is flashing some new improvements too. Our Boys, Girls, and Youth Soccer teams are wearing their brand new jerseys. The Robotics and Mock Trial teams have their state championship trophies in the trophy cases and banners waiting to be hung. We will soon open our new weight room to students and staff. New clubs are starting up in the next couple of weeks; make sure to keep an eye on your email inbox for more information.
Then, of course, we start our seasons undefeated – at 0-0. We are unblemished. Practices feel crisp. We are hopeful. Competitions will begin again soon – and the newness will wear off. I can’t wait.
Go Gryphons!

The AMC 10/12 provides an opportunity for high school students to develop positive attitudes towards analytical thinking and mathematics that can assist in future careers.
The AMC 10 is for students in 10th grade and below and covers the high school curriculum up to 10th grade. The AMC 12 covers the entire high school curriculum including trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry, but excluding calculus.
These competitions are administered around the country on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, and Tuesday, November 16, 2021. Students must take the exam through a school. Developing Connections
Ways to Get Involved and Give Back - Kelly Schiffman, Director of Development
Dear Eagle Ridge Academy Families,
Welcome to our 2021-22 school year at ERA! We are thrilled to see our students back in the building and have enjoyed seeing all of our families! At Eagle Ridge Academy, we encourage and celebrate involvement from our students, families, and staff/faculty in a variety of ways. Be involved by attending or helping plan an event, volunteering for a project or for a teacher, talking to your employer about sponsorships or partnerships with ERA, or donating a gift to support the important work we do here at Eagle Ridge Academy.
As a tuition-free, public Charter School and a school of choice, Eagle Ridge Academy receives state funding on a per pupil funding structure – determined by MN State legislature. Per pupil funding follows every Minnesota student to the public school the student attends. Both traditional public school districts and public charter schools receive the same per pupil funding rate. But unlike traditional public schools, charter schools do not receive any funds from local voter approved levies, which, for Eagle Ridge Academy, equates to nearly 30% less funding per year than our neighboring school districts. Therefore, in order to sustain the Academy into future generations, enhance programming, make facility improvements and additions, and offer a competitive compensation plan to our teachers, we must raise funds to close the funding gap.
Funds are raised at Eagle Ridge Academy through several areas of outreach:
· Events
· Corporate Partnerships
· Matching Gift Programs
· Individual Giving
· Employee Giving
· Give to the Max
· Major Gifts
· Capital Campaigns and Year End Appeal
· Grants
· Sponsorships
· Volunteer Match Programs
· Miscellaneous programs such as SCRIP, AmazonSmile, Microsoft Rewards, etc.
Eagle Ridge Academy is fortunate to have its own foundation, Friends of Eagle Ridge Academy (FERA), a certified 501(c)(3), whose purpose is to support and sustain Eagle Ridge Academy for future generations of scholars, and through which donated funds to the Academy are made.
There are several ways to participate in giving at Eagle Ridge Academy. Creating additional revenue sources and building community is important as we strive to create the best possible educational experience for our students while staying true to our mission. Enjoy giving from the heart for a good cause with the benefit of receiving a tax deduction.
For more information on how you may participate in helping to develop Eagle Ridge Academy, please contact Kelly Schiffman at 952-746-7760, ext. 1107 or by email at kschiffman@eagleridgeacademy.org. Visit our website for online giving and other important information at https://eagleridgeacademy.org/giving/ways-to-support-era/.
Volunteer
Eagle Ridge Academy views parents and students as integral contributors and active participants in our school. The Academy is most successful when parents and students work together with the teachers and staff to create and sustain the best possible learning environment.
There are many opportunities for volunteerism for every taste, talent, and time-commitment. Consider “Giving 5” by signing up for the area(s) of your interest here.
Pledge Your Support
Pledge your annual support to Eagle Ridge Academy with an affordable monthly gift, broken down into smaller amounts, which makes giving easier, and allows a predictable revenue source for Eagle Ridge Academy. Click here to pledge your annual support.
Corporate Match Programs
Do you work for an employer who has a Matching Gift Program or supports community events as recommended by the employee?
Consider reaching out to your Community Relations or HR departments to ask about their community support and employee giving opportunities. Many organizations match employee gifts up to 100% (essentially doubling the impact of your gift to the Academy), donate to charities of choice based on volunteer hours, and sponsor events financially or with in-kind donations. Search this website to see if your workplace matches.
Be informed by asking today!
Shop with SCRIP
Eagle Ridge Academy offers SCRIP, a gift card program that gives back to Eagle Ridge Academy with purchases on everyday items such as groceries, restaurants, retail, and gas. Buy gift cards at face value from more than 750 retailers and SCRIP donates a portion of all purchases back to Eagle Ridge Academy. Orders go in on Friday, with delivery to ERA the following Tuesday. Save the Date! Eagle Ridge Academy is celebrating Give to the Max Day on November 18!
What if you could help our school receive $1,000 just by giving $10 or more?
Join us for Give to the Max Day on November 18, and you could help us receive $500, $1,000 or $10,000. Just make an online donation on GiveMN.org and your donation will be entered into a drawing for a $500 Golden Ticket every 15 minutes for Friends of Eagle Ridge Academy. Donations will help support the students of Eagle Ridge Academy. Last year, the ERA community helped us raise $22,000 on Give to the Max Day for our new Playscape Project.
Here’s the really exciting part: One donation made on GiveMN.org during the Give to the Max Day campaign will be randomly selected to receive a $10,000 super-sized GiveMN Golden Ticket. Starting in October, donors may "schedule" their gifts ahead of time. Please watch for more information.
Help us increase our odds and make the most of your gift by making a donation on November 18 on GiveMN.org. Search for Friends of Eagle Ridge Academy, then make your donation. Together, we hope to raise more than $10,000 on Give to the Max Day and you can help us reach our goal!

September Food Service Information - Brittany Radtke, Chef
Hello Eagle Ridge Academy Families!
As we kick off the school year, we are so excited to be back on campus serving the school’s students, faculty, and staff! Our team at Taher, Inc. is working behind the scenes with our distributors and suppliers to manage the increasingly difficult challenge of supply and demand due to disruption all over the globe.
The supply chain disruption that started with COVID-19 hasn’t gotten better. We expect disruptions to our menus when there are product shortages and we are prepared to meet these challenges as they occur.
The food service management industry has been hit hard globally and it is very interesting to see how suppliers and distributors are being impacted by everything from weather to even the 2022 Winter Olympics as many businesses have had to shut down in China to prepare for the event. All of this is coming at a time when food prices are the highest they’ve been in 10 years and hunger is on the rise.
We are committed to making sure we feed our guests. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know so we can address them up front. My team at Taher will help navigate through the unknown and I will keep you informed with any updates to our food service program.
Thank you for trusting our team to prepare meals for your children. Taher staff will work to make sure that even if the menu must change quickly, your kids will receive a balanced, USDA-approved meal at school. We enjoy seeing every person who walks into the cafeteria — connecting with them and feeding them!
Sincerely,
Chef Manager Brittany Radtke
