Marauder Moments
Williamson High School Newsletter - February 2019
Dear Williamson Families,
We have posted information about the dangers of vaping previously, but it is time in this month's newsletter to make it front and center. We know you have seen and heard concerns about teenage vaping use in the media and from other parents. This issue is a tricky one, and one that we need your help to confront.
We have two priorities: to address the misconceptions of students that it is safe to use, and to work aggressively to catch it when it occurs.
Safety: The liquids that are in the vape or juul pods are unregulated and someone using these are inhaling any number of chemicals. As the chemicals in these pods are unregulated, so is the amount of nicotine in them. There are many studies that show the amount of nicotine in a juul pod is substantially higher than what people think. While vaping etc. was introduced to help adults stop smoking, there is nothing safe about it.
Detection: Vaping with its visible vapor cloud and scent is detectable if we are diligent in checking the bathrooms regularly, but juuling has made it harder to detect use because it emits so little vapor. A student could conceivably use it in the middle of class or right in your car. We have found that many students feel uncomfortable in the bathrooms at times, or around peers. This is not acceptable to us, and we know you share this expectation that students should be comfortable here at school and with friends. Better means of detection are still on the horizon, but this is still a concern.
Here are a few articles for you to review. We realize that this topic is not uplifting, but it's more widespread than any of us would like to believe.
We are considering hosting a parent night for our community to better educate families. Please take a moment to answer the one question poll below to let us know of your interest in a parent night related to teens and vaping.
Thank you!
