Guided Reading: Implementing Research Based Small Group Reading Instruction K-5

Effective small group reading instruction involves accelerating reading progress through close, careful observation of students' reading behaviors and utilizing prescriptive strategy based comprehension instruction. In this session we will focus on strategic reading instruction that focuses on students reading increasingly challenging texts with accuracy, deep comprehension and fluency, not simply moving students through levels. Topics to be covered in this session include:

  • Small group reading instruction for the advanced reader and the developing reader

  • Utilization of targeted reading prompts to promote student thinking and text comprehension

  • Impact of oral language development on reading comprehension

  • Planning for guided reading based on students' observable reading behaviors

  • Identifying reading behaviors to teach for at various levels

  • Identifying an appropriate teaching focus in guided reading

  • Utilizing strategic actions for processing texts

  • Viewing videos of small group reading instruction to analyze teaching behaviors

  • How to teach the reader, not the text

  • Matching books to readers based on observable reading behaviors, not levels

Teaching to Achieve Deep Level Reading Comprehension in K-2

Everyone is welcome! This session is an extension of our June 8th training! Reading involves lifting meaning from the printed page. Comprehension occurs when skilled readers interact with the text and self-question, infer, make connections, summarize, synthesize and relate. Topics to be covered in this session include:

  • Guidelines for powerful reading instruction

  • Developing strategic actions for comprehending texts

  • Strategies that promote students' self-monitoring of comprehension

  • Utilizing think alouds to model effective comprehension strategy use

  • Creating a vocabulary rich classroom environment

In this 3 hour workshop we will take a closer look the Units of Study and the components of the Writer's Workshop, and focus on strategies for improved classroom implementation. Teachers and administrators will learn overarching plans and precise details that can help students reach and exceed the high expectations of our TEKS. You will leave with an understanding of where we are headed with Writing Instruction, and resources to help you along the way!

This session will answer the question, “What does the rest of my class do while I’m working with a small reading group?” Includes practical suggestions for establishing, managing, and using literacy work stations in K-3.

Notice and Note: Deeper Reading Comprehension 6-12

Join us for this fast-paced day as we look at what it means to help students, grades 6-12, become not only better readers but lifetime readers. This workshop will focus on the principles and the strategies that will help all students, even those who struggle the most with texts, read them with deeper engagement, comprehend them more fully, and assess their implications more thoughtfully and responsibly.


  • Strategies to encourage close reading

  • Strategies to engage even the most reluctant readers

  • Strategies to encourage rigorous thinking from all students

  • Strategies to help guide students from surface level readers to attentive, responsive readers

  • Strategies to help students read both fiction and nonfiction with deeper understanding
