How to Build an Organic Molecule
What is a molecule?
Everything in your body is formed by molecules!
A molecule is a specific collection of atoms that has its own characteristics and functions.
Examples of molecules:
Atoms are the building blocks of matter, and matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Examples: Matter - you; not matter - light, gravity, heat.
The most important element to life is carbon. A regular carbon atom is 6 electrons, 6 protons, and 6 neutrons.
Life on Earth is carbon based. To be considered "alive," carbon must be a main component of a chemical makeup.
Other Important Elements: CHNOPS
C - Carbon
H - Hydrogen
N - Nitrogen
O - Oxygen
P - Phosphorus
S - Sulfur
These elements make up most of what you are right now. When you die, your molecules will break down back into their atomic parts and go on to be other things like trees, birds, even people!
ALL life share these elements from bacteria to flowers to insects and in that way all life on Earth is the same.
We are all made of star stuff!
