A NOTE FROM DR HITCHMAN...
As we enter the month of February, it is difficult to believe we are halfway through the school year. As we begin a new semester, I would like to congratulate the 608 Lightridge students who achieved straight A or A/B Honor Roll status during the 2nd marking period. I admire and respect our student’s resiliency, determination, and motivation during this unique and unprecedented school year. While I am proud of our students who achieved honor roll status, I also realize we have students who are struggling academically. Our Academic Support Program is up and running and we have plenty of trained peer tutors and staff members who are available to assist students whose grades are not where they want them to be. We will also be unveiling our credit recovery program during the month of February which will target those students who failed a class during the 1st semester. We will also be recommending students for our Check-in/Check-out (CICO) program which will provide an opportunity for students to begin and end their day on a positive note with a trusted adult. If you have any questions regarding any of our academic, social, emotional, or mental health programs please do not hesitate to reach out to our school counselors or administrative team.
The month of February marks the end of our winter sports season and I would like to thank our student-athletes, coaches, parents for successfully navigating the season. I appreciate everyone’s cooperation with our health mitigation strategies to ensure our student-athletes could practice and compete in something they have an interest and passion for. Continuing with our theme of “pivot” this year, our fall sports programs begin try-outs and practices in February. We have also begun the course registration process for next year and encourage parents to participate in our Coffee with the Counselors sessions which are being held during the first week of February. Our yearbook staff is hard at work to create a yearbook which includes as many students and staff as possible. We are struggling with candid photos. We want to see as many of our students included in the yearbook and if you have any pictures, please consider using the yearbook link on the front page of our website to submit your pictures. Students reading, a finished product, wearing of Lightridge gear, or enjoying an outdoor activity are just some of the submission ideas. Help us create a yearbook for our students which represents our students.
As we get closer to the day when students whose parents selected hybrid in-person learning enter Lightridge, I think it is important to remember our students are currently in school and have been attending classes since September. Their grades count, clubs and organizations are meeting, and assessments are being delivered. Many of our students are doing well academically and attendance has been awesome. I respect the right for every parent to select which option is best for their student and family whether it is 100% distance learning or hybrid in-person learning. These are not easy times but I know as long as we stick together as a community, communicate, and respect each other, we can have a successful 2nd semester. Regardless of your decision, our dedication and commitment to our students will remain. Everyone’s preference is to have students inside the school building and I appreciate your patience and cooperation as we get closer to that day. Thank you for continuing to light the way and thank you for taking the time to read our February newsletter.
Take a look at the slides below and see why we think Lightridge Counselors are the BEST!
2021-2022 COURSE SELECTION
The course selection process for next school year begins at the end of January. This may seem early to select courses, but this information is very important in regards to staffing decisions and course options for next year.
During the month of January, teachers will be evaluating student performance and data to make recommendations for course levels for next year. Teacher recommendations will be populated automatically into StudentVUE. Please take these teacher recommendations seriously, and encourage your student to have a conversation with his/her teacher if the student does not agree with a teacher’s recommendation. The core classes will be locked in StudentVUE and can only be changed with the school counselor AFTER the individual academic advising session has been conducted. Students and parents can edit elective courses in StudentVUE between January 25th & March 25th. Counselors will meet with ALL students individually to review each student’s course selection and discuss them in depth with their Academic Career Plan and post-secondary options.
Please remember this is a process. Please take advantage of the presentations being offered below as we believe these will answer all of your questions regarding course sequencing, class options, and graduation requirements.

PEER TUTORING is READY!
HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:
Before school and during lunch:
1. Students who would like to attend a drop in session before school or during lunch should complete the request form by 2pm the day prior. This form is needed to allow the monitor to plan break out rooms and determine the number of tutors needed in each break out room to assist students.
1. For before school sessions:
- Students will drop in to the session beginning at 8am.
- Once they arrive, attendance will be taken and the student will be moved to a breakout room to join their tutor.
- At the completion of the session, the peer tutor will complete a detailed report form to email to the students assigned teacher.
- Students will drop in to the session beginning at 12:34pm.
- Once they arrive, attendance will be taken and the student will be moved to a breakout room to join their tutor.
- At the completion of the session, the peer tutor will complete a detailed report form to email to the students assigned teacher.
During study hall:
1. For one-on-one peer tutoring during study hall, a formal request must be filled out by the teacher.
2. Once the formal request is made, a permission form will be sent to the parent, granting permission for a private one-on-one virtual session between the peer tutor and student.
3. When the permission click form is returned, the student will then be paired with a peer tutor and emailed a google meet link with the date, time and tutor name. During the preassigned study hall time, the tutor and tutee will sign in to the google meet for a one-on-one session. At the completion of the session, the peer tutor will complete a detailed report form to email back to the referral teacher.
4. Should additional sessions be desired from the student, a schedule can be established with the peer tutor and step #3 will be followed for each session.
Updates from the College Board
1. Discontinuing SAT Subject Tests.
- The expanded reach of AP® and its widespread availability for low-income students and students of color mean the SAT Subject Tests™ are no longer necessary for students to show what they know. AP provides students rich and varied opportunities to showcase their knowledge and skills through college-level coursework. Courses like AP Computer Science Principles and AP Capstone™ provide the type of hands-on learning experiences and practical, real-world work that colleges want to see from students.
- We'll no longer offer the SAT Subject Tests in the U.S. Students in the U.S. will automatically have their registrations canceled and receive a refund. Because SAT Subject Tests are used internationally for a wider variety of purposes, we'll provide two more administrations in May and June of 2021 for students in international locations.
- We've contacted our member colleges, and they'll decide whether and how to consider SAT Subject Test scores from students who have them. Students should check colleges' websites for the most up-to-date information on their application policies.
2. Discontinuing the optional SAT Essay.
- This decision recognizes that there are other ways for students to demonstrate their mastery of essay writing. At the same time, writing remains essential to college readiness, and the SAT will continue to measure writing and editing skills. The tasks on the SAT Reading and Writing and Language tests are among the most effective and predictive parts of the SAT. Students can still take the SAT with Essay through the June 2021 SAT administration.
- After June 2021, we'll continue to provide the essay only in states where it's required for SAT School Day administrations for accountability purposes. Students who are registered for the SAT with Essay this spring can cancel the Essay portion at any time, free of charge.
3. Exploring a more flexible SAT—a streamlined, digitally delivered exam that meets the evolving needs of students and higher education.
- The pandemic has highlighted the importance of being innovative and adaptive to what lies ahead. We're committed to making the SAT a more flexible tool, and we're making substantial investments to do so. We are consulting with our members in K–12 and higher education and will have more to share about that work later this spring.
- There's still a clear demand from students to take the SAT as a way to show their strengths to colleges. Most immediately, we're working to provide as many opportunities as possible for students in the class of 2022 to take the SAT this year by:
- a) Allocating seats that would've gone to students taking SAT Subject Tests to those who want to take the SAT.
- b) Being prepared to expand capacity for existing administrations and add administrations in the fall if the pandemic continues to impact testing this spring.

ACCESS for ELLs
ACCESS for ELLs, or the Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners test, is a state and federally mandated English language proficiency assessment administered to identified English Learner (EL) students in Kindergarten through grade 12. The assessment helps LCPS monitor the progress of ELs' English language development throughout the school year and from one year to the next.
ACCESS testing will take place for Lightridge students on Monday, February 1 and Monday, February 8. Transportation will be available to students who would normally ride the bus. Make-up testing will be scheduled for Monday, February 22; transportation is not guaranteed for make-ups so unless a student is ill, they should make every effort to attend the main testing dates..
Click here for complete information on ACCESS for ELLs testing.
Change in Required Assessment Process for SY 2020-2021 – High School Courses
Under the 2017 revision to the Standards of Accreditation (SOA), students must take end-of-course (EOC) Standards of Learning (SOL) tests following course instruction if they have not earned a verified credit in the subject area. Specifically, the SOA includes the following language:
- “Each student in middle and secondary schools shall take all applicable end-of-course SOL tests following course instruction…Students may earn verified units of credit in any courses for which end-of-course SOL tests are available. Students shall not be required to take an end-of-course SOL test in an academic subject after they have earned the number of verified credits required for that academic content area for graduation, unless such test is necessary in order for the school to meet federal accountability requirements.”
For example, a student who is enrolled in Earth Science and has not earned a verified credit in science must take the EOC Earth Science SOL test. This student does not have the option of “skipping” the EOC Earth Science SOL test and earning a verified credit using the EOC Biology SOL test which he/she is scheduled to take the following year.
- The waiver of this requirement for the 2020-2021 school year provides students with additional flexibility in choosing the SOL tests used for verified credit. For example, a student who is enrolled in Earth Science in 2020-2021 and who has not earned a verified credit in science could choose not to take the EOC Earth Science SOL test and wait and verify his/her science credit using the EOC Biology SOL test the following year.
Waiver language: Middle and high school students must still take all EOC SOL tests required for federal accountability. Middle and high school students may take any EOC SOL test needed for verified credit for graduation.
This waiver provides students with some flexibility in which EOC SOL tests are used to verify credits. It does not change the requirement that students earn verified credits nor does it change graduation requirements.
Why is this waiver being provided?
VDOE recognizes the unique impact of COVID-19 school closures and changes in instructional models on Virginia’s public school students. To provide maximum support and flexibility, choice to participate in assessments is available where permissible for high school courses that will impact students’ GPA, course progression, and possibly college admission plans.
Please note the decision not to take an SOL test this year requires a student to take an SOL test in a subsequent year. Parents and students must determine what is best for the student when deciding whether to access this flexibility, particularly for current juniors whose opportunities to test during their senior year are limited. While not recommended, parents may refuse for their student to participate in federally mandated assessments.
How will Lightridge implement the waiver?
Counselors will discuss assessment options with students during their mid-year scheduling appointments and the School Testing Coordinator will create a survey that informs parents and students of their choice(s) and allows them to indicate a preference prior to the spring non-writing SOL test administration windows. Course content teachers will not provide class level direction regarding assessment decisions.
Spring 2021 EOC Writing Test
Juniors will be eligible to take the EOC Writing SOL later in March. Students and families will receive an email with more details in the near future, once the county has decided on a schedule and format that is equitable for both DL and Hybrid students.
AP EXAMS
We are pleased that your student has chosen to take an Advanced Placement (AP) course this year and want to assist you in planning for the AP exam, which will be administered this spring. Please review the following information carefully.
Students, parents, or guardians are responsible for the cost of the AP exam. Each exam is $86.00, with the exception of AP Seminar and AP Research, which are $134. If you have not yet paid, the school’s on-line payment portal is still open for payment. Within the portal, students will need to select the name of the AP test(s) they wish to take. Please contact your student’s school to discuss the process for accepting cash or check payments. Refunds will be provided to students who cancel their AP exam or fail to test. Requests for a refund should be emailed to the School Testing Coordinator.
If a family needs to arrange for a payment plan or anticipates difficulty in paying for the exam, the family should speak confidentially with the school Principal or School Testing Coordinator. If your child receives free or reduced lunch, AP exam fees are covered by LCPS.
The AP exam administration schedule is attached. Parents/guardians/students must provide their own transportation to the school on the day of testing. Please make every effort to schedule vacations, appointments, or other activities on dates that do not conflict with the testing dates. Make-up testing is permitted for verified emergencies only. Morning exams begin at 7:45 AM and afternoon exams begin at 12:15 PM, with exams lasting between 4-6 hours. Students may not be dismissed from an exam until all students have finished testing.
Additional information for parents and students can be accessed through the College Board’s site and the LCPS website.
If you have Testing questions or concerns, please email Donna Draisey.

GIRLS LACROSSE
Kere Knapp has been coaching lacrosse in the NoVA area for 19 years for high school, travel, and youth. In addition to coaching lacrosse, she has coached diving at South Lakes HS (States winner!), cheerleading and gymnastics.
Prior to coaching, she accepted to play lacrosse at Washington College, then graduated from George Mason University with a BA in English. Prior to college, she was a tri-athlete at W.T.Woodson HS, lettering 11 of the 12 seasons in diving, cheerleading and lacrosse. She was the starting goalie for lacrosse all four years, won Districts all four years, Regions three years, States two years, went undefeated senior year, was team captain two years, MVP two years, and All-Region three years.
Kere’s passion in coaching is helping players see a greater vision on and off the field to what team sports has to offer in all aspects of life: friendships, time management, ability to work with all personalities, leadership, pushing outside comfort zones and being dedicated regardless of outcomes. Being able see a difference in an athlete’s life, because of all the characteristics sports can give, is what gives Kere the greatest joy! She’s extremely excited to be part of the inaugural program at LHS!
Off the field, Kere has two rescue Dobermans, three amazing daughters (6, 11, 14: all play lacrosse, of course!), works as a Federal Account Executive for DocuSign, and leads a large global cosmetics business with Younique.
