Note from Brian
"News We Can Use"
One of the initiatives we will be implementing this year at KCDS is a school-wide formative assessment program.
Formative assessment (diagnostic testing to inform instruction), is a range of formal and informal assessment procedures conducted by teachers with students during the learning process in order to modify teaching and learning activities to improve student achievement.
In other words, we collect data on each student for the fundamentals literacy, numeracy, and content knowledge to individualize instruction for each and every student.
Over the course of the next 4 to 6 weeks, KCDS teachers will be using a common set
of formative assessment tools to gain a baseline for placement of students at their
“just right level.”
The assessments include:
• Phonological Awareness Skills Test
(Sounds of the English Language - “pre-reading”)
• Developmental Spelling Inventory
(Word Study and Spelling)
• Developmental Reading Inventory 2
(Reading Fluency and Reading Comprehension)
• Narrative Writing
• Presentation
• Math: Numeracy and Problem Solving
These assessments will allow us to challenge each student with high expectations.
We look forward to sharing the results of these assessments with you at the first
parent-teacher conferences.
Best,
Brian
