Changes 18-19 Birthday Treats
There are a number of reasons for this that I've outlined below. I will undoubtedly miss the treats due to my sweet tooth, but we have reached a point that it is no longer in the best interest of our students to risk birthday treats in the building.
Safety: With 1 in 13 children having a food allergy, anyone serving food to children needs to be aware of food allergies and the potential for a life-threatening allergic reaction. More than 15% of school-aged children with food allergies have had an allergic reaction at school with reactions ranging from mild to severe and even fatal. The safety of all students is a priority.
Inclusion: Sending in a food treat to the classroom to celebrate can exclude those children who have food allergies, diabetes, or other dietary restrictions.
Promoting Healthy Lifestyles: Many times foods served in the classroom, in the case of birthdays, class parties or rewards for behavior, are low in nutrients and high in calories. The CDC has projected that one in three children born in 2000 will eventually devlop a form of diabetes linked to being overweight.
**Next year, teachers will send out lists of ideas for birthdays for their specific classroom. We will still hold classroom parties at Halloween, Winter Break, and Valentine's Day. Food can be brought into the classroom during these times that is store bought with a label of ingredients used to make them. We will continue to send ongoing information out regarding this change
Changes MVP Process!!!
Steps to Become an MVP Volunteer (please do these steps in order):
1. Complete an online MVP application. (Visit www.smsd.org)
2. Attend a MVP training session. (Training dates and times are posted on the “Volunteering” page on the district’s website. These sessions can fill up quickly and are limited to 12 attendees.) Combined training and fingerprint screening dates are offered at the Center for Academic Achievement, 8200 West 71st, and require a reservation. Please call 913-993-6447 or email volunteer@smsd.org for a reservation.
3. Drop in fingerprint screening is available at the Center for Academic Achievement, 8200 W. 71st St., on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and from 12:45 p.m. to 4 p.m. Fingerprint screenings can only be done AFTER attending a training session.
It is also important to note that you must renew every 3 years. We are hopeful to have a document with our MVP's that are compliant by the start of the 18-19 school year.
