WITH HEARTS AND MINDS, WE'RE TURNING VISION INTO ACTION
Principal's Message
Remembrance
November is a time for reflection and an acknowledgement of those that gave the ultimate sacrifice, so that we can enjoy the rights and freedoms of today. As Thomas S. Monson is credited with saying...
“The past is behind, learn from it.
The future is ahead, prepare for it.
The present is here, live it.”
We live in very complex times and taking a few minutes to reflect and think about the things that we are grateful for can help us pause in the present, connect with the past and plan for what's next. Wearing a poppy is a reminder that we have not forgotten about the meaning of sacrifice and its lasting impact. I hope you are able to find some time on November 11 to reflect with your family and friends.
Wishing all of our Rossland Summit School Community a safe and healthy November.
Take Care,
Mr. D. DeRosa, Principal

INJURY PREVENTION
Guard Your Mouth
Sports mouthguard use is influenced by the attitudes of players, coaches, and parents. Research shows that orofacial injury in sports is prevalent but preventable. Studies evaluating the effectiveness of sports mouthguards have shown the overall risk of injury is 1.5 to two times greater when a sports mouthguard is not worn during athletic activity. Mouthguards are a cost-effective investment in protection. Read about the benefits of mouthguards and other important information. Help spread the word to protect teeth by including mouthguards in educational health promotion and injury prevention discussions.
NUTRITION
School Food Environment
The food environment includes foods that are offered at school, as well students’ eating experiences. Students do best when they have positive role models, and when foods offered both in and outside classrooms are in line with healthy eating messages.

TOBACCO AND VAPOUR PRODUCTS
Drug History Timeline
Canadian Institute of Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria, as part of their Helping Schools resources, has created a Drug History interactive timeline from 8000 BCE to today. A great resource for school projects.
Healthy Schools BC Website is a great resource.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
At RSS, we believe that no student will be denied access to programs, services or educational opportunities provided by the school because of financial need. Parents, caregivers or families needing school related financial aid (school/District fees, field-trips, school supplies, etc.) are asked to contact the Principal to make arrangements so that ALL our students have equal access to all the educational opportunities offered.
MEALS PROGRAM
RSS will continue to provide nutritious lunches for students in need through the School Meals Program. Parents who wish their child to take part in this program can contact the Principal [rss@sd20.bc.ca].
HEALTHY SNACKS
While ‘treats’ are nice, it is important to send healthy foods and drinks to school. For PE and regular water hydration, due to COVID-19, our water fountains are turned off. We do have bottle filling stations and encourage all students to have a re-fillable bottle.
Metal or 'Eco' friendly plastic bottles are preferred for safety considerations.
Thank you for your cooperation with this.

Planning to Travel Outside of Canada?
With travel restrictions beginning to ease and families are starting to consider opportunities to visit family and friends abroad we thought it would be helpful to shared the following information from the federal government:
Children 12 and under:
If you qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler, your unvaccinated children must follow specific requirements when you return to or enter Canada. This applies to unvaccinated children under 12 years of age who are accompanying a parent, step-parent, guardian or tutor who qualified as a fully vaccinated traveler when they entered Canada.
For the next 14 days, the children:
- must take pre-entry, arrival and Day-8 tests (unless under the age of 5)
- can’t attend school, camp or daycare
- can’t attend large crowded settings, indoors or outdoors, such as an amusement park or sporting event
- can’t take buses, subways, trains or other crowded transportation must follow all the requirements in the children’s handout provided at the border – See the attached handout
Youth age 12-17
Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated youth 12 to 17 years of age are subject to the 14-day quarantine, and all testing requirements for pre-entry, arrival and Day-8 tests, whether or not they are accompanied by travelers who qualify as a fully vaccinated traveler.

Bussing & Accessibility Zones - Drop Off and Pickup
Request to Parent/ Caregivers and Visitors
Our main entrance is a busy space before and after school. Busses are on a tight timeline to ensure they are meeting kids along their routes.
PLEASE DO NOT PARK in front of the school to drop off and pickup students, ESPECIALLY in the handicap accessible parking spot. A few car lengths down the street is super helpful!
Thanks for this!
Safe Arrival School Messenger
If your child[ren] will be absent from school, late or leaving early, please use SafeArrival School Messenger to inform us. - Download the App from Apple or Google Play Stores - Although teachers appreciate knowing, it is important that the office receive the notification so we can input the information into the system.
Thanks for using SafeArrival School Messenger!
