Amazon Future Engineer School
Bowling Green Junior High is pleased to announce its recent selection as an Amazon Future Engineer (AFE) school, a partnership between Amazon and Project STEM to improve access to computer science education in communities currently underrepresented in the technology field. The computer science sponsorship is offered in over 2,000 schools in all 50 states at no cost to the schools.
The Amazon Future Engineer program is a childhood-to-career program to inspire, educate, and train children and young adults interested in pursuing careers in computer science. The program offers qualified schools access to exploratory computer science classes through Project STEM, as well as implementation and ongoing support. Additional resources available include classroom curriculum, professional development for teachers, recruitment resources, classroom visits and real world connections, ongoing program opportunities, and more.
Principal Robert Lightning says Computer Science and Technology Teacher Matt Staggs has worked with school administrators to bring this program to Bowling Green Junior High. This summer, Mr. Staggs will have access to self-paced online professional development and onboarding sessions to begin the program next fall. Courses include topics such as Fundamentals in Scratch (CSE 1), Artificial Intelligence in our World (CSE 2), and Computer Science and Creative Media (CSE 3).
In the school’s acceptance letter, Amazon Future Engineer Senior Manager Mat Wisner says, “Whether a student aspires to be a software engineer or simply wants a foundational education to advance their aspirations, this is our chance to ensure all students have this access.”
