When He Was Born
Nelson Mandela was born on the 18th of July 1918 in the village of Mvezo , Transkei.
His mother's name was Nonqaphi Nosekeni and his father is Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela, Unfortunately his father died when Mandela Was only 12 in 1930. He went to primary school in Qunu and he got the name nelson from his teacher Miss Mdingane because everyone in the school had to have christian names.
Entering Politics
Mandela only joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1944 when he helped to form the ANC Youth League
Marriage
In 1944 Mandela married Evelyn Mase who was Walter Sisulu's cousin. Evelyn was a nurse and they had 2 sons Madiba and Makgatho and 2 daughters both named Makaziwe. They got divorced in 1958.
David Motsamayi
On 11 January 1962 Mandela secretly left South Africa under the adopted name David Motsamayi. To gain support for the armed struggle he traveled to England. In Morocco and Ethiopia he received military training and on July1962 he returned to South Africa. He was arrested in a police roadblock outside Howick on the 5th of August while returning from KwaZulu-Natal, where he briefed ANC President Albert Luthuli about the trip.
Prison
Mandela got charged because he left the country without a permit and causing some workers to strike. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison. He began serving his sentence at the Pretoria Local Prison and was transferred to Robben Island on the 27th May 1963 and then went back to Pretoria on 12 June.
Release From Prison
He was taken to a hospital where he was diagnosed with tuberculosis on 12 August 1988. He transferred on 7th December to Victor Verster Prison near Paarl where he spent his last 14 months of imprisonment. He was released on a Sunday 11 February 1990. He then negotiated the end of the apartheid in South Africa to bring peace to a racially divided world.
Discrimination and White Dominance
Discrimination was when people got treated differently depending on their race and White Dominance went that whites were treated much better than blacks and this was what Nelson Mandela fought against.
President
Mandela was the first ever democratically elected President on 10 May 1994. His government focused on advancing racial reconciliation.
Afrikaner Minority Government
After the Afrikaner Minority Government established apartheid and a system of racial segregation that favoured whites.
His Death
Sadly Mandela died on the 5th of December 2013 at his home in Johannesburg.
